I keep asking myself this questions, why do we not find African men taking interest in hobbies that are productive, just like Europeans and Asians. These hobbyist are usually men who use their experiences and expertise to build, create and also manufacture home made machines etc. They usually would form groups to share knowledge, experience, challenges and new methods. Some groups includes, homemade engineer manufacturers, jet engine manufacturers, rail system manufacturers, etc..the list is endless This culture as been on for centuries, and that's one of the biggest drivers of technological advancement and growth. My question again is: Why are Africans not bothered about stuffs like this?

chisupport:Such things as money, status, and sex are held above everything else in the mind of the average African even in the year 2024. A good portion of Africans still believe happiness is derived from such things. ![]() |

mrvitalis:True to some extent. But some that are finally able to solve these basics end up adding a side chick(s), spend more on alcohol, have more kids than they need, build more houses than needed. Sometimes it's just mindset. |

| Re: Why Africans Are Consumers Rather Than Producers by Kobojunkie: 6:56pm On Nov 02, 2024 |
1Sharon:I think the lack of book culture is largely to blame on Tradition/Religion. Our cultures and our religions do not typically promote the mining of knowledge and application of knowledge in such a way as to benefit us both at the family, community, and societal levels. So, the typical Nigerian child is discouraged from a young age from investing more in that curiosity in life in the acquisition of knowledge. Books are there majorly for studying and building a successful career out of and not much else. ![]() |

mrvitalis:Again ,and I am sorry to say this, you are talking sentimental rubbish and making inane excuses for our failure as an African subset of the black race. Ever heard of the saying "necessity is the mother of invention" ? It is the theory that built the STEM (Science, technology, Engineering and mathemetics) success of the world that has given us major solutions like Penicillin, electricity and even Microsoft. When the African faces challenges, he automatically looks for others to provide solutions for him because he is a sentimental creature, in comparison to others, who does not understand that every man and woman can/should be a solutions provider and change agent. Africans don't produce what they need, meaning they will remain net consumers of the manufacturing capability of foreigners, because we automatically expect others to solve all our problems for us rather than take even ten minutes to reflect on issues troubling us and how we can device solutions for them. That is the truth of our reality. We shout food scarcity and cost but look, for example what White farmers did in Zimbabwe till Mugabe drove them out only for him to realise black farmers cannot pick up the slack to be as productive as white farmers because they could not apply themselves as devotedly and as studiously. It is simply about mindset not intellect because we have seen black Africans rise to the top in Western nations where innovative solutions provision for society is held as sacrosanct. When Africans are in society where all are encouraged to provide solution, many excel to become commendable solutions providers. Whereas black in Africa demand solutions from others, without even thinking or their own suitability and capacity for solutions provisions, because that is the mindset here. Meaning we gain less solutions overall. Hence the reason Nigerians and many African nations are a mess. |

N3TRAL:For the purpose of this thread, there does not need to be even a single one because you don't need to be a Nobel laureate to begin producing STEM related solutions for your people This is about using STEM to solve problems. You may not have many Turkish Nobel laureate in the STEM discipline yet do you you know how fairly advanced their engineering, medicine and scientific research sectors are? Brits are going to Turkey for medical procedures, meaning they accept Turkish medical health treatment to be acceptable, yet I am sure Britons are the more celebrated and acclaimed medical experts, scientists and researchers than Turks. The Turks makes weapons they can use and others around the world buy for God sake while we cannot make weapons in Nigeria we can use let alone others would want. We import. The point, which you miss, is that Turkey is producing solution for itself because her people key into the concept of local solutions for local problems whereas Africans are too comfortable with waiting for others to produce solutions for African problems. |

WizardOfNG:I asked the question because you claimed that : "When Africans are in society where all are encouraged to provide solution, many excel to become commendable solutions providers." The Nobel Prize is the most prestigious laurel on earth for breakthrough and innovation in Knowledge. For over 123 years of its existence, no Black person in Africa or Abroad has won a Nobel Prize in a STEM discipline. Black people abroad usually win in the same categories that Black people in Africa can win. For instance, a Black person in Africa can win a Nobel Prize in Literature like Wole Soyinka, in Economics and Nobel Peace Prize like Nelson Mandela won in Africa and Obama (though mixed) won in America. Black people abroad thrive in Entertainment, in Arts, in Finance/Economics, in Religion, in politics and in sports which are what Black people in Africa, Europe, Arabia and America or anywhere can thrive in. Despite the well-funded diversity programs for more than 30 years now, black people are not still thriving in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths. Yes, a Black person can parade 3 PHDs in a STEM discipline but he is never the best in that discipline. In fact, he only knows that discipline on the surface by learning the theoretical inventions of others which he may not be able to put into practice. The Black man is deficient in Science and Technology and Engineering, and cannot build things. That is why we are consumers and not producers. Let's tell ourselves the truth, first of all and it'll be easier to solve the problem. Attached below is a screenshot of my Google search, read the last paragraph from a robot who is even trained to be "politically correct":

N3TRAL:Does such a society even exist as we speak? ![]() Black society in America, for example, still drags around its past with it — that shadow basically still colors much of the way many blacks in America reason to date. So, you can't say that such a society exists yet in America. ![]() |

Kobojunkie:The outliers are the exceptions, the minority. A very small sample in a large population. Impossible to selectively breed out the majority. We're headed nowhere. |
