No great scientific breakthrough. Other countries are making progress while they're moving backwards scientifically. Other countries are creating infrastructure while American infrastructure keeps decaying. American strength now lies on only one thing - the petrodollars. If Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese products, by Dec tariffs are paid by the buyer not the seller.
American companies buying the goods have to pay those tariffs in order to be able to bring in their goods to the country. They will have no choice but to hike up their prices to cover the cost of importation.

He was saying he’d put 200% tariffs on Chinese imports. Meaning an item that cost $1000, will now increase exponentially from $1000 to whatever the 200% tariff paid to bring it in adds to the cost.

Common sense should tell you that the US is even more vulnerable if it is just a purchasing economy and not a production economy.

What happens when those countries the US buys from demand that the US buy it with their own local currency?? Just like Russia forced the EU to buy Russian gas in Rubles. The seller make the rules, not the buyer.

What happens then?

Americans would suffer greatly if the world abandons the US dollars.
