Tinubu's Economic Reform Is Not The Reason Nigerians Are Suffering. by Tallesty1(op): 9:02am On Nov 07, 2024
Tinubu is undeniably a skilled politician, but being adept at politics doesn’t necessarily equate to effective leadership. After leaving office in Lagos, he took credit for the accomplishments of previous and subsequent governors, claiming to have provided a "blueprint" for Lagos. However, this "blueprint" remains elusive, with no clear details available to the public.

As president, he has introduced another concept, "reform." His supporters argue that these reforms are the reason behind the rising cost of living, but true economic reform should aim to foster a stable, sustainable economy that benefits both individuals and businesses.

Let’s take a closer look at the so called reform.

He removed the fuel subsidy almost immediately after taking office, a decision that drastically impacted Nigerians. Considering that Nigeria generates around 75% of its electricity from generators (roughly 40,000 MW) the removal of the subsidy has had severe consequences.

Many businesses in the country rely on generators, and the subsidy removal has driven up operational costs across various sectors.

To make matters worse, Tinubu also floated the naira, which led to inflation and an increase in import costs. As the naira’s value became more volatile, businesses found it harder to plan for the long term, and foreign investment became more cautious.

Small businesses began closing down, and Nigerians faced an escalating poverty rate as a result. It became harder for people to make ends meet despite working harder every day.

I can remember how during the brief moments when the dollar rate dropped, his supporters started asking why prices didn’t follow suit. They even blamed Nigerian businesses, failing to recognize that the government still holds responsibility.

You can’t expect prices to drop when the dollar rate could spike again unpredictably. On top of this, the cost of clearing imported goods has surged. Containers that once cost 5 million naira now require at least 20 million naira.

Those who know about this argued that high clearing levy will reduce imports which will ultimately help promote local production, but with the subsidy removal and the devaluation of the naira driving production costs to unsustainable levels.

So Tinubu basically made importation difficult to increase production and then used fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation to make production more difficult.

Instead of providing relief or solutions, he’s busy increasing taxes.

So, can these actions be considered true "reforms"? I have my doubts. In my view, Nigeria’s struggles aren’t a result of genuine economic reform, but rather a consequence of poor planning and lack of vision and a clear direction under Tinubu’s administration.

The man took credit for Fasholas remarkable first term...the word they used was " Master Plan"... that subsequent governors just had to follow the so called masterplan he had drawn.

Till date Lagos is still one of the most filthiest places on earth.

He did promise to " widen the tax bracket" and. " reduce purchasing power".

Tinubu that supported and gave legitimacy to neighborhood louts who extort helpless market women, other traders and bus drivers na him una vote for president.

Have people actually sat down to think what this means. That the man has been an oppressor for the last 24 years?

He is continuing to do what he is good at. Collecting money wether by force or by law. That is all he has to offer Nigerians.

"Oppression"

It's only when you fail that you begin to engage in explanations to rationalize your failure.

Tinubu is a monumental failure. He is going to have that badge for life and no explanation will erase that fact.

Nigeria has experienced a default downward trajectory since 1960, which literally means that 2010 will be worse than 2000 and 2020 will be worse than 2010, and so on.

For instance, with a consistent balance of payments deficit for decades due to far more imports than exports, exchange rates are bound to worsen. With subsidies on petroleum products we couldn't refine, PMS prices were supposed to increase geometrically whenever a new government stopped a fraction of the fuel subsidy.

Since the critical thinking of the average Nigerian is below the globally accepted average, Nigerians simply attribute our economic failures as a people to a new regime. It is why an Aisha Yesufu who called Jonathan's Government the worst would turn out and call Buhari's government she voted for the worst Government ever until Tinubu.

Let’s get to the facts.

In 1994, petrol was 5 naira per litre.

In 2004, petrol price peaked at 65 naira per litre (1200% increase) with subsidy.

In 2014, petrol price peaked at 97 naira per litre (49.23% increase) with subsidy.

In 2024, petrol price averaged 1200 naira per litre (1,137% increase) without subsidy.

Let's face it, the current price of petrol per litre is very natural without subsidy. In fact, it's not as bad as the 1200% increase that happened between 1994 and 2004, even with subsidy.

If we check exchange rates, we will see similar results.

Once I hear Tinubu removed subsidies I just know the person is not smart at all

Tinubu removed subsidies and petrol is ₦1050

If you can't figure out how much we pay as subsidies today then you are not smart enough to write anything

Epitome of ignorance.

Reduction of purchasing power, devaluation of naira, high cost of production as a result of expensive petrol are the effects of Tinubu's policies.

The whole of our current problems started with "subsidy is gone" and I formed my opinions on that.

Nah the main issue started with his foolish attempt to float the naira

Tinubu administration took everything u were never meant to do when floating a currency n did all

Yes he attempted to remove it then returned it
Then denied it till date

This is a very one sided take. The president just started implementing his reforms, we can’t start judging the outcome yet.

Lets wait till next year before drawing conclusions.
