Fuel for aircrafts is usually calculated in ratio to distance/ duration of flight.

The pilot should have known before take-off.

It's not even possible to be an error. It's usually filled on the Flight plan. Before Tower approves take-off.

"Air Peace flight leaving Lagos to Abuja stopped halfway"

Stopping and returning to Lagos at halfway means the remaining fuel can get them to Abuja.

So, it's definitely not halfway. Most probably few minutes into the flight.

This is a serious safety breach and heads must roll.

There are several reasons this may occur, pilot can meet bad weather and for that reason spend more time airborne, or a mechanical failure such as landing gear issues, but not to Deliberately take off with low fuel.

Go and read about the case you just mentioned again.

there was a time during Jonathan period that I was travelling from abuja to lagos, we were already taxiing, when the pilot announced that mama peace was on and they were all told to stay on ground. The plane was on and working, we receiving AC and chilling, fuel burning. And we were on the ground for more than 1 hour before the plane flew. Getting to lagos, they refused us to land. Same mama peace issue. The plane hovered and the pilot announced that he's not permitted soon, that he will go to the nearest airport and land land due to no enough fuel.
The story was dem say dem say, third party reporting.
Lagos-abuja, direct flight, 40 mins at most 1 hr on air, no pilot will leave lagos without enough fuel (and back) to abuja. How long did it fly before announcing it's going back to refuel? What were the circumstances that led to it not having enough fuel to continue the journey? Those questions can't be answered because it's a third party report, which is not even admissible in court.

In otherwords, pilot may get to Lagos, but won't be cleared to land immediately and may be required to be hovering around the aerodrome till clearance is granted.
That hanging in the air could take as much as 15mins...and that's unplanned fuel burning.
If such instruction comes mid air, the pilot needs to come prepared...best to sort more fuel from closest aerodrome.

The fact is, the aircraft has enough fuel for the journey...but probably doesn't have enough for extracurricular.
