Why Corruption Persists In Nigeria – Obasanjo by DoWhatThouWilt(op): 7:00pm On Nov 13, 2024
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has said that a society that does not believe in the consequences of bad behaviours will be riddled with corruption.

He stressed that there was corruption at a high level of government because of the lack of free and fair elections.

Obasanjo was speaking at a youth dialogue on the side-line of the presidential youth dialogue and disclosed that there is no country without corruption but there were countries where corruption is not their way of life.

He berated successive leadership in Nigeria for alleged poor handling of the power sector, adding that when he voted president in 1999 and was leaving in 2007, the problems remained to date.

He stated that for youths to become emerging leaders and change the narratives, they must be positively instructive, adding that those at the helm of affairs will not want to leave but the change is imminent.

He reaffirmed that Western liberal democracy is not suitable for the country, noting it is the reason why there is no visible development recorded.

He added that integrity, compassion, and fear of God are part of the attributes that one should look for in leadership.

Obasanjo's comments are ironic considering his tenure was not without its share of corruption scandals. This is really a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

But corruption is not as terrible and horrible as we have today.
"Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these?' For it is not wise to ask such questions." - Ecclesiastes 7:9-11

The seeds of corruption can be traced back to the colonial administration, where favoritism, bribery, and embezzlement were already present.

In my own opinion, corruption persists in Nigeria and particularly in governance because no body is holding anyone responsible.

If there is capital punishment for corrupt individuals, corruption will die a natural death.

The Chinese were more corrupt than Nigerians, the leaders used capital punishment to bring the menace of corruption down to the lowest ebb.

If you know the consequences of your actions are inevitable, no matter who you are, you will have to think twice before taking such actions.

When criminals were openly facing firing squad in bar beach, corruption in Nigeria was very minimal.

Our successive leaders were only paying leap service to fighting corruption because they themselves are corrupt.

Obasanjo started the corruption since he became president in 1999, from awarding Lagos/Ibadan express way project to Bi-Cortney his pal and nothing was done on the road to the contract of Sango-ota bridge that he did not finish be he left office, to the sale of Nitel company And So On .

Those balablu supporters and the headless mobs aka obirodents will soon attack you.

They will tell you to ask sowore to go and contest for his local government chairman position or governor first. As if that is the criteria to contest for the office of a president
