"It's unfortunate that Nigerians are perceived as morally bankrupt, inept, and corrupt. The fact that a leader with questionable character, involved in fraud, theft, and drug peddling, can be elected and expected to perform well is concerning. It seems that Nigerians' reliance on sentiment and ethnic loyalty often leads to voting for unqualified or corrupt candidates from their region or religion, rather than choosing leaders based on merit ¹. This pattern suggests that the country's challenges may persist until Nigerians move beyond tribal and regional affiliations."

**he pocketed another $5 Million With cronies.

President Olusegun Obasanjo, who led Nigeria from 1999-2000, during which time he swore to fight corruption in the country, obtained considerable helpings of the infamous Haliburton bribe money, the Special Investigation Panel headed by Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has declared in an interim report.

According to the document, which was submitted to President Umaru Yar’Adua in May last year by Mr. Okiro, Obasanjo shared the sum of $74 million USD between 2000 and 2001 with his Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, as well as Funsho Kupolokun and Gaius Obaseki, who were successive heads of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation during the government’s early years.

During that same time span, said the interim report, Obasanjo also pocketed $5m from the Halliburton slush funds.
Other major beneficiaries included General Sani Abacha, who got $40 million in 1994-95; Ibrahim Aliyu, $11.7million in 2001-2002; former Minister, Dan Etete, $2.5 million in 1996-1998; Abdulkadir Abacha, $1.8 in 1998; and M. G. Bakari, $3.1 million
Among the more startling of the revelations in the interim report, the panel wrote as follows about some of the key Nigerians involved:
On Chief Olusegun Obasanjo: “He was President of Nigeria from May 1999 – May 2007. Reports suggest that Stanley met with Chief Obasanjo and then Group Managing Director of NNPC, Gaius Obaseki, in Abuja on 11th November 2001 to negotiate pay-offs in respect of Trains 4&5. On 20th December 2001 Obaseki reportedly met with Chodan and Stanley in London over lunch in furtherance of discussions.

In March 2002, TSKJ won the Train 4 and 5 contacts for $3.6 billion USD allegations are the Gen. Obasanjo may have received a minimum of $4 million USD as pay-off.”

LAGOS – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has revealed that he was offered the sum of N100 million during the 5th national assembly in order to support a Third Term agenda for the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

He stated this in his book ‘MR SPEAKER: The legislative life, service, and resilience of Femi Gbajabiamila’ written by Charles Omole and Musa Krishi and forwarded by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General.

In a copy sighted by DAILY INDEPENDENT, Gbajabiamila said while other lawmakers were offered N50m to support an amendment to the constitution that will accommodate the Third term agenda, he was offered N100m which he rejected.

Asked about his best moments as a lawmaker, Gbajabiamila was unequivocal in his choice. He was unapologetic about the role he played in killing the Third Term Agenda. “My best moment as a lawmaker? The death of Third Term”, he said repeatedly to drive home his point.

He continued “The day it was pronounced dead, because like I told you, we had sleepless nights. We were meeting; we got a place in Asokoro, hidden somewhere. We’d start our meetings sometimes at 11 at night and leave there at 4 am in the morning. Can’t remember how many of us. It was a risk to life. It was a risk to life".

“So, the day it was pronounced dead, was a happy day; it was a relief to me. I was a free man. Look, I was offered inducement, at that time, by one of the major proponents of Third Term, I think at this point, I wouldn’t mention his name, but a major player in this country.

“Whilst they were offering members N50 million, I was offered double. An N100m at that time, and you know what N100m was, which, of course, I turned down. I say that just for you to understand the pressure: financial, mental, and physical pressure. We had no other job in the House except Third Term, the constitutional amendment”.

“So, for me, unfortunately as noble as that work was, the best time was the day it died, not the Third Term itself, but the day it was killed on the floor” Gbajabiamila recollected with some relief.

The truth is... Almost every Nigerian living in Nigeria is either corrupt or waiting to be corrupted by money and power.

The better less corrupt ones are those that have left the country... And they are corruption-free because the nations they live and work in have zero room and tolerance for corruption.

It will be easier for the entire Antarctic to become as hot as the Sahara overnight, than for Nigeria to be rid of corruption.

Obasanjo's comments are ironic considering his tenure was not without its share of corruption scandals. This is really a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

"Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these?' For it is not wise to ask such questions." - Ecclesiastes 7:9-11

The seeds of corruption can be traced back to the colonial administration, where favoritism, bribery, and embezzlement were already present.
Wise Man.

you’re correct in someway and you are still not correct.
Check this, With subsidy and without subsidy difference must dey.
Nigeria pass government introduced subsidy when our economy was fine. That subsidy they used it to thief money
Now that global inflation is everywhere, this is the time Nigeria needs subsidies not when they introduce it to thieves.
The funny part is loans can’t let subsidize work for Nigeria now . Maybe in future nobody knows
Re: Why Corruption Persists In Nigeria – Obasanjo by Abee79(m): 10:06pm On Nov 13, 2024
Major reasons why Corruption still thrives in Nigeria:
1. The Law Enforcement agencies are fuckìng weak (caused by: poor welfare & renumeration; compromise; lack of training; lack of equipment; etc);
2. Archaic laws & outdated constitution;
3. Total lack of political will to halt corruption.
4. Judicial system has been compromised.
5. No capital punishment for corruption (eg. public firing squad; no appeal).
6. Corrupt individuals are celebrated and voted or appointed into sensitive political positions.
7. Warped societal expectations.
8. Lack of patriotism.
9. No fear of God or love for humanity.
10. A widespread feeling of helplessness & hopelessness on the part of the masses.
11. High rate of poverty & unemployment;
12. Lack of a credible national database.
13. Get-Rich-Quick mentality, especially among youths.
14.

You are right. Democracy is not all about free and fair elections. It's also about checks and balances-everybody watching each other to make sure the other is not misbehaving.
Re: Why Corruption Persists In Nigeria – Obasanjo by DrWokili: 12:23am On Nov 14, 2024
There is no civilian president that General Olusegun Obasanjo did not support during elections and sought to dethrone during the reign of his proteges. Can we mention Ya'Ardua, Jonathan, and Buhari? Obasanjo is a phony self-acclaimed solo saint, but people of history will take his holy sermon with the levity it deserves.

Here is a man who sold the nation's precious assets to cronies at peanuts and whose phoney electricity contracts drained the princely 16 billion dollars from the national purse. He confessed to being a poor man on the day he was sworn in as the executive president of Nigeria but left the state house as a billionaire in dollars. What happened Okikiola?

In sane climes, this man and his likes should be cooling their heels in the prisons! The president that will rescue Nigeria must be completely detribalized, knowledgeable, and incorruptible whose behavioural signature is empathy. Yes, there are men and women with these virtues, but they have not emerged on the national political terrain. I am positive that by His mercy on Nigerians, God will orchestrate their synergetic emergence sooner than expected. Until then, the successive governance of deception and pains continues!

In my own opinion, corruption persists in Nigeria and particularly in governance because no body is holding anyone responsible.

If there is capital punishment for corrupt individuals, corruption will die a natural death.

The Chinese were more corrupt than Nigerians, the leaders used capital punishment to bring the menace of corruption down to the lowest ebb.

If you know the consequences of your actions are inevitable, no matter who you are, you will have to think twice before taking such actions.

When criminals were openly facing firing squad in bar beach, corruption in Nigeria was very minimal.

Our successive leaders were only paying leap service to fighting corruption because they themselves are corrupt.
100 percent well said. They are not ready here yet. Kill corruption by killing the corrupt ones. They will do normal sharperly.

Are u still in same age or height since u re born. growth is constant. the moment corruption is introduced to the nation then it is bound to multiply nd spread. so therefore if OBJ is still in power we will still find ourselves in this current mess of far worse or a little bit fair.

Dear Lord,
Send down the man or woman. 🙏
The last time God did send someone with all those qualities, that person was tortured to death. I think it happened somewhere in Isreal many years ago and since then God is unwilling to make another mistake.
