How did you put an automatic gear car in “drive” and you were still able to push it out without starting the engine? I’m just curious.

We used to put our dad’s manual Mitsubishi car in neutral gear and then push it out without turning it on.

Nice write up. Brings back memories…
Turn on the ignition, not the engine and put it in neutral, you can push it that way.

I hope it is not those cars whose cooling system has been altered, if it is even the noise of the cooling fans will alert his mum. 😂

Back in Uni days (2002-2006) I also did this a lot and got into trouble alot of times with my dad's car and mums car.
Sometimes I will return the car in peace sometimes with damages, scratches etc.
But I will never ever forget one catastrophic experience back in secondary school, when 4 school mates sneaked out their dad's car from IB to visit Lagos. On their way back to IB they had a terrible accident and 3 of them lost their lives (2brothers and the 3rd guy) the fourth guy was super lucky cos they just dropped him off after the accident happened.
Looking back now, I don't think I will ever allow my kids go out with my car if i am not with them or another adult.
Before..

You can limit them frim damaging your car by treating your kids as adults. Give then permission to use the car but they must be responsible. The more responsible they are, the more likely they will drive careful

When your children don't see driving as a big deal, they are less likely to drive recklessly.

Back in 2016 I was in the habit of sneaking out with mums car. I always go out with mum's car without her permission 🤣🤣 she wouldn't let me anyway so what's the point of asking ?

At the start, whenever I wanted to go out with the car, once I start the car she'll hear the ignition sound and tell me to come out and drop her keys.
I had alot of thinking, "there has to be a way I can go out with this car!". "this car can't just be looking at me oo, wetin go sup like this?"

So I figured a way of opening the car and putting it on drive without starting it. I'll push the car beyond Mum's window side where she can't hear the ignition sound.
Shebi na if she hear the car sound she go shout. OK now cheesy

Sometimes it might be an hour after I had left she'll know the car is no longer in the compound. She'll call my phone and shout that I should turn back wherever I am and return her car.

Me too I'll vex and tell her I am already turning back and not going with her car again.
Of course I'll never turn back grin grin grin

I'll go for hours visiting several places with her car.
My phone will be filled with all sort of missed calls

Sometimes I'll drive and won't even buy petrol... At least I know, the gauge where I should not exceed. Well on some days I want to be generous, I'll buy 700 fuel. 700 fuel don too much sef, I fit buy 400 grin
I know when I'm back home I'll face all sorts of shouts and complaints. Atleast I drove the car to my satisfaction grin grin grin grin
That thing way u do your mama, your children go do u wetin pass that one.

That's, your children will not only be driving your car but they will drive your cars.

Yes. Only if you put it on neutral and not drive.

Lol you have weak parents then, my mum had a car and my dad did as well but we can't even play inside talk more of driving it, they Neva use slap fry your ears before, my parents na disciplinarian raised to power three. Even tv we no fit switch on when my dad is around and when they leave home we take turns being the lookout when we're doing something they don't want us to do, I had zero freedom growing up to even participate in shenanigans.

lol! I was smiling as I read this. Me and my brother used to do this with my dad's car back in the day. It was his second car, so when he and my mom went off to work, and my grandma was left to watch us, we would wait till she was taking her afternoon nap, push the car out the gate before starting it, and then drive around the area to see friends. Fun memories.

One time, my brother had an accident with the car, and we had to fix the dent that same day...we literally sold all the old newspaper in my house and in my friend's house grin grin Teenage years were so sweet.

So sad. I also schooled around the same time you did. I was in Lagos, and my friends were schooling in Ife. I remember a day I wanted to steal my mom's car and drive all the way to Ife from Lagos. I had not even perfected my driving at the time. I'm glad I never embarked on that journey.

Never did because I felt I don't want trouble. My younger brother was the opposite. My parents used to go out in one car because my mom was selling at Tincan while my dad's office was at Aerodrome Road in Apapa and the other car was always home. The height was when my brother knocked the engine of my dad's car and he did nothing to him all because his name is Babatunde. That guy did all the unbearable because he knows my dad would only rant and goes Babatunde, how can I beat my father. I dislike that name to the highest heaven back then because I had to do chores way beyond necessary because Babatunde wouldn't do anything.
LMAO!!!! This your story cracked me up. grin grin

You're 100% wrong. If you turn off your engine and your car is on drive or reverse especially if the terrain is not straight, the car will move forward or backwards. I have experienced this a number of times. There are some very sloppy roads that if you don't apply your handbrake after you park, the car will move if you as much as rest on it. A story made frontpage some months ago where a a parked car moved down a sloppy road in a school hitting and killing a student in the process. Not much was said about how the car got to move but most likely people rested their weights on it enough to push it down and it's handbrakes were not applied.

We had no problem sneaking cars. Popsi (may his soul continue to rest in peace) made us drive early, all of us. Infact one day like that we were both driving down from somewhere in the delta to Lagos, he got down and told me to drive. Mercedes 280SEL ie S class of those days aka shagari benz. Omo, I fired the moto, when we got to river ovia just outside Benin na so we see accident with dead bodies. Fear made me say I no drive again, lol, he told me to get back on and drive. I was about 16 then. I remember one of my brothers comming back from school, seeing brand new fleet of 504 brought in to be taken for painting to company color, mint ohh, Bros took one out and rolled over the vehicle. Popsi rake no be small.
Later when dad's companies bought new fleets of daewoo racers, 5 of different colours were kept as pool cars in he house for us kids to use. If I wear red today, I drive a red one lol. We had a house manager that had petty cash to fuel the cars.
There was no need for hide and seek, only a deadline in which we should all be at home. This was in the 90s though.
Years late wanted me to make my son drive early too, telling me to teach him, I no agree, na so him go de ginger boy telling him tales of how he allowed us drive early and so I must do the same. Omo, I no agree, these days are different. He even threatened to buy him a car, I no agree.
Make the boy graduate first, then him fit get one, there is time for everything. cool
I also grew up in the 90, and enjoyed your story...I feel like turning it to a story/novel sef. cheesy

Turn on the ignition (don't start the engine), engage your gear to anywhere you want, from reverse to neutral to drive.
Turn off the ignition when you are done to save battery but don't put it on lock mode so you can turn the steering
Very wrong... Turn on the ignition and place on neutral not to anywhere you want...

If the gear is on D it won't move... It has to be on neutral...

Your car will move on D. You can try it by stopping on a slope, then leave the transmission on D without engaging the handbrake.
It's on manual that you use the gear to prevent the vehicle from moving on static state when the engine isn't running, that's why you can do push n start for a manual car but can't do same for auto transmission
