Aprocco:
Alaafin is above all kings in the West and Majority of kingdoms in the South all the way to Cotonou.

Having colonized and ruled over them in the Oyo empire where he imposed his dialect upon the territory ( the Yoruba spoken across the entire Southwest is Oyo dialect), imposed taxes, Yoruba Bible is written in Oyo.

Alaafin was the government pre- colonial era.
Very very INCORRECT!
Ask and you'll get better informed.

How is obi of Onitsha the 9th?

The Attah of Igalla, the Ohinoyi of Okene, the Emir of Zuru, king jaja of Opobo and that one in Benue are all ahead of Obi of Onitsha.
You are drunk, so a minority monarch from an inconquental tribe is more than the Obi? Oga you need to see your psychiatrist.

Whoever composed that list needs a big knock on their head. Speaking of Yorubaland, the top hierarchy is;

Alaafin of Oyo
Ooni of Ife
Oba of Benin
Alake of Egba
Awujale of Ijebu

Olubadan, Oba of Lagos are well respected but are not first class Kings in Yorubaland.
what has oba of benin got to do with yoruba land?
Re: First Class Kings In Nigeria by Olamideayomide(m): 3:03pm On Nov 16, 2024

The list is useless because it would only fuel the tribal slurs ongoing here for some time now, with idiots warming up for meaningless arguments. All the kings are wealthy, have regard and cooperation among themselves but you would see people who have nothing reasonable using their energy on childish banters and cusss..

There are a lot of reasons why Nigeria will never balance as regards governance and political structure. The British came and stole from Africa, deposing kings and replacing them with their (British) loyal stooges. Our traditional rulers are placed under local government while the royal throne in England is still well above the British prime minister and every other government officials. Today, even stupid, dirty and smelling governors like Ganduche, Wike, Obaseki, etc misbehave/mess without regard to them but the royal throne of England is more honored, decorated/adorned, regarded, etc more than the head of government, as a ceremonious head in the UK...
UK is a constitutional MONARCHY!! UK has A KING. ONE!
What is a supposed egalitarian democracy that copied American presidential system doing with a bunch of "kingS"??! Do you see any kings in the America you copied??

Number 9 Obi of Onitsha does not have any wide influence and didn't even resist British colonialism.

Eze Aro whose influence even reached Opobo, Cross River and most of Abia state, Akwa Ibom, Imo state, Ebonyi state had wider influence, spirituality of Long juju, and wealth as they raided slaves and trades in Oil.

Arochukwu held greater and vaster influence pre-colonial Nigeria than Onitsha the Bini people.
Kanu orji was the real last eze aro, the others that followed are political ezes.
Like you rightly said he was the most influential king in South East till his demise. The obi of onitsha no get level past onitsha local govt area.
Are u an aro man because na only us understands this story and we don't cap about it self. Ako bu ije!

First class in Nigeria, not Yorubaland. Though I blame the op, the headline should be prominent traditional rulers in Nigeria. Because first class traditional rulers are in all the 36 states

It’s not ranked. If it is ranked, then all the other traditional rulers will need to prove to us why they all should not be prostrating for Ooni

what has oba of benin got to do with yoruba land?
Because of Oranmiyan, Son of Oduduwa. The authority of all the Obas of Benin were based on being a direct descendant of Oranmiyan and Oduduwa. Hence the Benin monarchy carries the bloodline of Yoruba ancestry.

Is sultan of sokoto a traditional ruler or a religious leader.
This list is centered on the major tribes in the country, we have kings in the coastal region of Nigeria like
Amayanabo of kalabari
Amayanabo / king jaja of Opobo
Amayanabo of Nembe
Amayanabo of Bonny
This thrones played major roles during the trans - Atlantic slave trade era and before the amalgamation of the protectorate.

King Jaja of Opobo's image was used as Nigeria 🇳🇬 independent logo
