Alaafin shouldn't rank above the heir and successor to Oduduwa himself. He is called Arole Odua for that reason. I understand that Alaafin was able to build an empire and exercise defacto control over most Yoruba kingdoms for a large part of the precolonial, but that's it. Oonirisa should be number one as the dejure leader, and the defacto leader i.e. Alaafin should be second.

Anyways, I don't really care because I am a republican, and if I had overriding powers, I would scrap the traditional institution and political clergy in Nigeria.

Olubadan of Ibadan isn't even regarded as a king in Oyo State, but a mere chief. In fact, Soun of Ogbomosho is more recognized than him. Oba of Lagos shouldn't be there too.
Who told you. Dey there make pant dey wear you. He is the second in hierarchy in oyo state

So we have kings in this country? shocked Wow!
Re: First Class Kings In Nigeria by lagonovo: 3:48pm On Nov 16, 2024
Confirmed.

Aprocco:
Alaafin is above all kings in the West and Majority of kingdoms in the South all the way to Cotonou.

Having colonized and ruled over them in the Oyo empire where he imposed his dialect upon the territory ( the Yoruba spoken across the entire Southwest is Oyo dialect), imposed taxes, Yoruba Bible is written in Oyo.

Alaafin was the government pre- colonial era.

Every state have their own first class chiefs. Only a few are influencial beyond their region, states or even domain. Some of these people are not even known in states other than thiers.

Because of Oranmiyan, Son of Oduduwa. The authority of all the Obas of Benin were based on being a direct descendant of Oranmiyan and Oduduwa. Hence the Benin monarchy carries the bloodline of Yoruba ancestry.

Apart from the Emir of Kano, the Oba of Benin and the Alafin of Oyo, the rest are charlatans and better off managing their family affairs.

As for that oni of ife that has been fingered in fraud, he should be dethroned cos he's brought nothing but disgrace to his yoruba people just like the exconvict Dapo Abiodun and USA indicted drug money launderer and now USA CIA spy in Nigeria Tinubu
I find this post funny. grin cool
Re: First Class Kings In Nigeria by Olamideayomide(m): 3:54pm On Nov 16, 2024
Yes, it's true that the states have first class kings.
Op needs to includes some kings too not only the kings he listed.
Cocolatti:
First class in Nigeria, not Yorubaland. Though I blame the op, the headline should be prominent traditional rulers in Nigeria. Because first class traditional rulers are in all the 36 states

The Governors of each respective states have the powers to enthrone, dethrone and upgrade.

At least each Nigerian state has one first class king. When it comes to influence, power and wealth of these monarchs, that's another ballgame entirely.
Re: First Class Kings In Nigeria by lagonovo: 3:59pm On Nov 16, 2024
By tradition, Oyos did not recognise Ooni as a king, but a priest. That's why there was no interference from Oyo or anywhere when the Modakekes chased Ooni and his fellow priests away from Ife for 13 years.

However, all is history today. You are only the king of your town.

Alaafin before Ooni ? Really ?

The Attah of Igalla, the Ohinoyi of Okene, the Emir of Zuru, king jaja of Opobo and that one in Benue are all ahead of Obi of Onitsha.
nobody knows them. First class kings should be kings before the formation of the country

Re: First Class Kings In Nigeria by OlujobaSamuel: 4:27pm On Nov 16, 2024
Kings are not ranked by the FG but their State.
Ooni, Oluwo, Ataoja and Owa of Obokun are the first class in Osun
Alaafin, Soun, Olubadan are first class of Oyo
Alake, Olu Ilaro, Akarigbo n Awujale are that of Ogun, etc
I no understand Lagos own, e be somehow, but I know Akran, Akiolu, Ikorodu, Oloto, Oniba, Onisheri or something, Elegushi, Oniru, etc
The ranking some of us give the king's are base on popularity and how long some of them have been on the throne.
In the North, most of the states are having just one king that spread across domains within the state.
