techbro1:I believe Chancellors are ceremonial positions.. I think Ooni of life, Oba of Benin, Obi of Onitsha, Emir of Kano, Sultan of Sokoto..etc... they are all chancellor of a university.. All these first class kings have a lot on their plate with their respective communities than the headache of day to day running of a university.. The only time you probably seen them at a university function is during convocation or sometimes matriculation |

Just watch, he will put one Olaniyi, Amusan, Otunba or Orioda to replace him. The most discriminating “president” in history of Nigeria. |

Why should he care about the consititution when Nigerians are sitting idle and allowing him to flout the constitution upandan? When he came and unconstitutionally removed and replaced a sitting CBN governor using obviously trumped up charges non of you spoke up. Evil reigns when good men remain silent, eventually all that remains silent when injustice is happening to someone else would eventually collect their own portion of injustice. legitnow1: |

The chancellor of government-owned institutions is a political position and appointed by the president, it used to be majorly occupied by traditional rulers back in the days, who were largely passive and only come to the university only on convocation. The vice-chancellor is an academic and handles the day-to-day running of the institution and chairs the university senate. As you can see, the new day chancellors and governing council that passed the boundaries of their roles have been booted out. If you want to handle day-to-day activities, go and pioneer your own private university 😀 techbro1: |

FreeStuffsNG:Understand a statement/question first before responding. With respect to his question, VCs of Nigerian universities are more popular than the chancellor. Only few people know that Wole Olanipekun is the Chancellor of Unilag. Infact, if you ask 10 people to choose between the two who they know occupy the two office, they will choose the VC. Don't get me wrong, my point is Wole Olanipekun is popular generally due to his job and other things but only few people not close to the institution know he is Unilag's chancellor unlike the other person. |

techbro1:The VC is the executive head of the institution. He’s the one that runs the school. The Chancellor is just a titular position. He doesn’t work there and he doesn’t really have a say over what happens in the school. Most times, it’s a prominent figure in the state like a popular politician, a popular king, or even a popular actor or Pastor; basically anyone who sets a good example for others. It’s just a ceremonial role, nothing to do with the running of the institution. You probably know them for other reasons but just don’t know they act as the chancellors of some institutions. For example, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja, Ooni of Ife, is the Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka. Hope that helps. |

While I am reasonably sure the reasons behind these actions are correct ( if the facts here are to be believed) I am wary of accepting anything as 100% true until there is controvertible evidence that one can weight against. Truth is Education like anything should have a powerful self regulating organization with sufficient power to take such decisions without involving a government with a political/ economic mandate. "But" No 1 He who pays the piper plays the tune. Until Nigerian universities are self funded, any idea of independence ( excluding qualifying and standards criteria) cannot happen. In the US stuff that happens in the university is controlled by its internal structure but also by its funding source- alumni and corporate and third party individual endowment contributors. These are people with deep personal interests in the prestige, national importance and brand history of the university. "But" No 2 Nigerians want cheap fees for public services. They regard this as part of their rights as citizens - part of the national cake if you will. Yet they also want high standards of governance, consumer protection. This equation can never work. Cheap fees mean poor services and high politics. It allows the lowest standard of people into governance because highly qualified want a return on their time and effort. These are all things that should have been solved in the good old days of the 60-70s when Nigeria was running trade surplus and had a high revenue to population ratio. The government would have had more options in freeing itself from over involvement, time and focus on issues like this. Government would have been smaller and more nimble and innovative. Nigerians must understand that if they don't change the mentality of social entitlement and " let change begin after I have done my own" we will continue to have sub optimal government and a brain drain that will continue until the "last person to leave Nigeria turn off the lights" thing. We do not have an inexhaustible supply of human and intellectual capital. The FGN must create valid pathways to success outside of university by re qualifying vocational education along the old city and guilds methodology. With the highest certification counting as credits towards university education and even a final degree. The UK, Germany etc have working models for this - lets reach out to them. Jamb population must be reduced, universities must charge realistic fees and change their revenue/endowment mix. Without this education will die a slow and painful death at great cost to the national economy. |

techbro1:Chancellor is a ceremonial post, just like Nnamdi Azikiwe was a ceremonial president of Nigeria while Tafawa Balewa was the prime minister. Same is the VC majorly running the day 2 day activities of the school, Academically and administrative. |

FreeStuffsNG:Story. Within the university community, the vice chancellor is more popular than the chancellor. I spent 6 years in the university without knowing who was my chancellor. Go around unilag and ask the students there who is their chancellor, 95% wouldn't know. But almost all of them will know the name of the Vc. |

techbro1:Chancellor is an honorary position. You dont get to control the day to day activities of the university and you don't get paid In Nigeria, the role has usually gone to traditional rulers |
