Your haemoglobin genotype has to do with the basic build of your blood cell, that’s the type of gene it contains.
And as we know, genes regulate our overall structure and functions; same way the gene type of your blood regulates its structure and function.
The normal one being AA, which yields structurally normal, spherical blood cells that can function well in some of the toughest situations we may find ourselves.
Those with the S gene, have their blood cells abnormally shaped and unable to withstand stressful situations; leading to the series of crisis those affected by it experience.

Blood group is basically a peripheral content of your blood cells, which determines how it reacts to certain stimuli.
Put simply, it plays “more of an immune function” for the blood. Reason why when a wrong blood group that does not tally with yours is transfused, there’s blood transfusion reaction.

Trying to simplify it as much as possible, but omo, make those wey know better come put mouth.

They’re basically not the same…
meta AI is really good lol.

Op here's the simple explanation
Blood group. It's the chemical content or composition of your blood. And it's categorized in 3 main groups, A, B and O. We also have AB which is a rare type.
To get the real composition we add a prefix sign + and - (positive and negative) this is also known as your Rh factor. Or Rhesus factor which is very essential when choosing a partner. A+ cannot Marry A- or O- if the consider child bearing and vice versa. But they can marry and bear children if they are of the same Rh. Example A+ can have a child with A+, O+, then A- can have a child with A- and O-.. also note that you can only receive blood from the same group, except for O which is termed as a universal donor. O can only receive from O. A can receive from O, But O cannot receive from A.

While Genotype is the genetic makeup of your hemoglobin, or your red blood cells which is the cell responsible for carrying oxygen in your blood.
It is characterized by the shape of your red blood cells when viewed under the microscope. We have 3 types AA, AS and SS.
A normal red blood cell is full moon shaped, so if your red blood cells are shaped like full moon you are AA.
Then abnormal red blood cells are shaped like half moon. They are termed sickled red blood cells, or sickled cell for short. So if your red blood cells are shaped half moon it is SS.
Some carry both normal and abnormal red blood cells, when viewed under the microscope, their blood group is termed AS.. they are normally called carriers.

It is worth noting that when choosing a partner to have children with it is very essential to know your genotype
AA and AA can marry, AA and AS can marry, AA and SS can marry, but AS and AS would have to reconsider cos the have a 90% chance of giving birth to SS. Which is not a good thing.

I hope this will enlighten you

Good day, fellas. I'm yet to understand the difference between blood group and genotype. I did blood test for about 14 or 15 years ago, when i was still in the tertiary school(my school conducted the for all the students in my school).

My test result came out and i was given a piece of card board paper indicating that my blood group is AA while my genotype is Ab+.

Pls, someone should explain this. If possible, in a lameman's language.
You mean your genotype is AA and your blood group is Ab+?

You tried, but: A blood group is the antigen(protein) found on the surface of a person's red blood cells. It's not the chemical content or composition of the blood or red cells themselves.

AA is full moon shaped

SS is half moon shaped

What about AS?

Is it three-quarter moon?

No pun intended...

And it is true that AA people generally live longer than AS and SS?

This one that you're asking this kind of question undecided. In case you're thinking of marrying someone with a weak blood system, I advise that you abort mission. If you're AA, don't pollute it by marrying AS (even though convenient) because you would surely give birth to one, thereby, starting a generation with a faulted bloodstream..

Generally, if you're AA (genotype), your blood group would never fall short of O universal (whether + or -)..

At OP, you even mixed your blood group with your genotype up there. Switch both sides...
How is he going to pollute it by marrying as or any other carrier cell. His children will never be at risk of being ss, so why are you being selfish and obtuse with your statement.

Let's clarify this matter. Blood group refers to the type of blood that has different antigens, while genotype indicates our genetic makeup. So, if your blood group is AA and your genotype is Ab+, it means you might be susceptible to malaria but don't have sickle cell issues. It's important to understand this difference for health reasons.

By the way, I deal in shared apartments in Lekki. If you're looking to pool resources for rent or need a short let in the Lagos Island area, or if you have an extra room to accommodate someone for a fee, feel free to contact me!
You that wants to teach someone doesn't know that there is no blood group called AA and there is no genotype called AB. Lol
Re: What's The Difference Between Blood Group And Genotype? by akseph1: 5:54pm On Nov 22, 2024
Jacktheripper:
First thing...

Both your Genotype and blood group are determined by your parents (Father and Mother). I can't go into an explanation of the genetics here.

Now to understand the difference between them, We need to talk about the blood.

You have seen the blood before, it looks red in colorr and liquid in form. But the blood is composed of many cells: Red cells, white cells, and platelets.

Our focus here is on the red cells.

So remember when you entered secondary school and you were sorted into one of the four houses: Yellow, blue, green or Red.

The red cells undergo the same thing: They are sorted into four groups as well: A, B, AB, and O.

Each one of us belongs to one of these four blood groups (OP, yours is AB. There is a lot to say about you. But space and time are not our friends today). We will get to the positive and negative stuff soon.

But these red cells are not just there to do some coloring agent work. They are the ones that move oxygen around the body. (Not your nose like some people may think).

And to perform this function, they need a protein called hemoglobin (HB). It's the cooler used for carrying food.

Now when it comes to genotype we are actually referring to HB genotype.

Because genotype means gene-type. That is, genetic makeup. The blood group we discussed have their own genotype, your eyes, hair, and any part of your body has its own genotype.

But why is the HB genotype significant?

Because it is the most clinically significant especially when dealing with SS patients.

So in your case, your HB genotype is AA. Same as me.

But some people are AS, while some are SC, and some can be CC.

The best way not to mix blood group and genotype is to quickly think of ABO.

Person: What is your blood group?

You (OP): *Quietly think of ABO*: Im AB.

You can be assured that every letter coming to your head is your genotype.

Lastly on the + and - stuff:

This one is just another differentiator for blood groups. There are like 50 systems of blood groups.

But the ABO (explained earlier) and this Rhesus method are the two significant methods.

People either have this rhesus protein or they don't. But most people do. Rare people like me don't. Thats why I'm Blood Group A, Rhesus D negative, or A neg for short.

Thank you for listening.
Kudos, I love your response. It touches everywhere as per the topic
Re: What's The Difference Between Blood Group And Genotype? by Amayabor1: 6:08pm On Nov 22, 2024
Simply put, your blood group refers to the presence or absence of antigenic materials on the surface of your red blood cells. There are many types of blood groups but the most important ones are blood group A, B, AB and O. Another factor in blood group is Rhesus factor. So, we have A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, O-. People that are O- (pronouced as O negative) are universal donors. They can donate blood to anybody. While those that are AB+ (pronouced as AB positive) are universal recipient. They can receive blood from anybody. Blood group is important when one needs blood donation in the hospital. For example, if you are sick and you need blood transfusion and you are A+, you can only receive blood from someone who is either blood group A or O. Blood group is also important when it comes to knowing if you are the father of a child or not. For example, if as a man, your blood group is A+ and your wife is O+, you can only give birth to children that are either A+ or O+. If you have a child who is blood group B, then that child can't be yours.

For genotype, it is basically your genetic makeup. There are many genotypes, but the most important ones are AA, AS, SS and AC. Genotype is very important when thinking of marriage. For example, if you are AS as a man, you should not marry a lady who is AS too because of increased possibility of giving birth to a child who is a sickler (SS). Genotype is also used to determine paternity. If for example as a man, you are AA and your wife is AA. All your children must be AA. If you have a child who is AS, then that child is not yours.

AS is a mixture of both full moon and half moon as viewed under the microscope. I don't know about AA living longer than AS and SS, but I know that SS normally have shorter life span due to complications from sickled cell. AS an AA live normal healthy lives. AS patients are generally immune to diseases especially Malaria. You hardly see them suffer from malaria, because their blood have a natural resistance malaria parasite, due to evolution.

I think you're mixing it up.

Blood Group: AB+
Genotype: AA

I think that's what you meant to say because there's no "Ab+" genotype.

P.s. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Your blood group can either be A,B,Ab or O the negative and positive signs attached to them are your rhesius factor . Your genotype can be AA( non Carrier ,) As( harmless carrier) and SS( carrier known as sickel.cell) . A doctor can even explain further for you but if you were never science inclined the whole thing go dey sound weird to you ..you can still read up in Google sha .. as regards your question your geneotype is the one that determines whom to marry sha. As you be AA you can marry SS and As . You have no wahala .it's As people and SS people that are always worried about genotype during choice of life partners
Thank you very much. So, what is the blood group of other genotype like AS and others?
