Abia Pensioners Go Spiritual Over Unpaid Gratuities by chopnaira(op): 3:09pm On Nov 23, 2024
Pensioners in Abia State ended their three-day prayer and fasting on Wednesday, as they asked Governor Alex Otti to honour his electioneering promise of paying them their pension arrears and gratuities.

Speaking under the aegis of Abia Pensioners’ Forum, Okey Kanu said the prayer session was a way of “seeking the intervention of Jesus Christ” and engaging God to prevail on Otti to “restore and pay our arrears of pension and gratuity as promised during the campaign in 2015, 2019, and 2023.”

He said, “On coming into office, this administration purported to have waived or forfeited the said arrears of pension and gratuity, sequel to the illegal memorandum of agreement it purportedly signed with the state NUP exco.

“We believe that our governor is toeing the current line based on wrong advice; hence our continued plea that he should revisit and rescind the same.

“It is a mark of godliness and strength rather than weakness. We are encouraged to agitate for this because this is our government, as pensioners, their families and indeed all Abians sympathetic to our plight played a major role in bringing it to being.

“Our grievance stems from the government’s position that we waived or forfeited these retirement benefits sequel to the said Memorandum of Agreement.

“But at the same time, the government has refused to comply with Paragraph 7(a) of the agreement which stipulates that in case of any dispute arising from the agreement, the parties shall meet to resolve the same by mutual negotiation.

“The government has refused to convene a meeting in this regard.”

He said the meeting was particularly necessary because the state Nigeria Union of Pensioners executive had denied entering into any agreement with the government to forfeit pension arrears and, especially, gratuities.

“The strange position adopted by the government as revealed by the governor during his last media chat on 7/11/2024 is that before the agreement can be revisited, the state NUP must return the money paid to them.

“This pronouncement is vague because it is unclear if the government meant the arrears accumulated by the present administration as paid in March 2024 or any other money paid to the state NUP Exco.

“If the former, it is misconceived because what was paid to pensioners in March 2024 was the arrears owed them as accumulated by the present administration.

“The greater part of the arrears remain untouched; hence our agitation for the same to be paid.

“However, if the latter is the position, then the payment is illegal as it is construed to be a bribe in which case the giver and receiver are liable. This does not in any way concern pensioners,” Kanu said.

The pensioners pleaded with the government to pay the arrears of pension and gratuity as promised, or pay the same by instalments (as done to tertiary institutions in the state) if the government did not have enough funds to pay at once.

Earlier, in his admonition of the pensioners, Pastor Success Obinya of the City Liberation Centre, Aba, prayed to God to step in and bring them on the right path.

Same Abia?

Were they cajoled or hoodwinked into signing the waiver?

The government self did them dirty. How will anyone even conceive the idea of pensioners waiving their arrears in this Tinubu economy?
That's unfair judging from the fact that the value of the arrears must have even been eroded by inflation.

E reach to go spiritual.

The man lied that his government uncovered fraud in the pension scheme and has used it to seize pensioners funds and divert it for himself.

This sounds funny to me. I am not trying to defend the present governor for not doing the needful but if only the past rogues from T.A Orji to Ikpeazu did the needful during their tenure, the present governor would have just focused on the recent retirees. May God help them.

Ten years from now, these mis.creants from the parasitic red mud region will tell us Otti is the greatest leader after Mandela. That's the exact thing they are doing with the bird voiced incompetent mofo from Agulu.

Even though Alex Otti fail to deliver his promise. his people will still praise him. They have to praise him just to cover up for Peter Obi....so, Abia state people should keep suffering and smiling so that those in other regions do not realize he is almost a non-performing governor.

I will not blame the retirees or criticize the government because how can you expect Gov Otto to pay all the pension as gratuities that have piled up since the time of Theodore Orji and Ikpeazu ? Should all the funds from Federal allocation and IGR be used to pay pension and gratuities alone ? Why didn’t this same pensioners make sure T.A Orji and ikpeazu pay all the pensions and gratuities that they owed before leaving office?
