VAT: Lagos Contributes 249.77bn, Gets 40.22bn, Zamfara Contributes N432.80m, Gets N5.65bn IfyafricaNov 23, 2024 2:06 PM According to Nigerian Tribune, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) data for August 2024 revealed a significant disparity in VAT contributions and allocations across states and regions in the country. For instance, Lagos, the highest contributor, provided a staggering N249.77 billion but received only a paltry N40.22 billion in return. On the contrary, Zamfara, one of the lowest contributors, contributed just N432.80 million but received N5.65 billion. A similar disparity can be observed between southern and northern states across the nation, with the southern states contributing more but receiving less, and the converse being the case for the northern states. In total, southern states contributed a substantial N387.06 billion of the N444.19 billion VAT revenue but received only N149.09 billion in allocations. In contrast, northern states contributed a modest N13.69 billion but were allocated N59.17 billion. The VAT contributions and allocations for each state and region in August are as follows: State/Region Contribution (N) Allocation (N) Lagos 249.77bn 40.22bn Rivers 70.54bn 15.54bn Oyo 20.11bn 9.46bn FCT 18.17bn 5.34bn Delta 13.09bn 7.82bn Bayelsa 7.12bn 5.58bn Kano 4.65bn 9.71bn Akwa Ibom 4.49bn 6.54bn Anambra 4.28bn 6.66bn Edo 4.05bn 6.08bn Zamfara 432.80m 5.65bn Imo 235.41m 6.01bn Other Southern States 41.67bn 70.35bn Other Northern States 9.00bn 49.46bn Regional Summary Region Contribution (N) Allocation (N) South-West 278.52bn 73.09bn South-South 100.38bn 46.97bn South-East 8.16bn 29.03bn North 13.69bn 59.17bn The allocation disparity has reignited debates around the derivation principle proposed in the Tax Reform Bill, emphasizing revenue redistribution based on consumption location.

Fabricated VAT. Because the headquarters of multinationals and companies are cited in Lagos State doesn't make Lagos State the location of the consumption. You play bet9jar in Imo State and Lagos State receivers the VAT. This is ojoroo. |

A kind reminder that the billions of naira paid to clear goods moving to all other part of the country is also counted as Lagos revenue. So the entire country contributes to the revenue Lagos generates All oil company headquarters All bank headquarters The airports patronized by the entire country etc All count as Lagos revenue too Nnpc imports fuel for the whole country, revenue=lagos As the OP above me mentioned. U play bets, revenue=Lagos, Oil and gas activities degrading Niger delta environs, revenue,= Lagos A wise lagosian will let the sleeping dog lie |

Didn’t they say they were trying to help other states since Lagos was getting most of VAT? Is truth not coming out now that they’re restructuring VAT to benefit Lagos? If you want to restructure VAT, restructure oil revenue too. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. You can’t just realize that VAT is unfair to Lagos when you have benefited unfairly from oil/gas revenue for decades |

Why are you particular about Zamfara ? Imo state that was said to be more developed than the entire northern Nigeria generated far lass than Zamfara that was regarded as rural area. Despite that, Imo still got far more than it could generate in 2 years in just one month. Is that not cheating? Yet, these same set of people are quick to refer to the northern Nigeria as parasites when they refused to look into the mirror to see the real parasites. |

givedemwotowoto:If they have to restrure oil revenues, that means they will also have to restructure the tax and levies revenues which Lagos alone generate more that 50%. The point is that, we need to take from the place of excess to feed the scarce. However, the annoying part is the governors of the states with scarce resources refusing to think outside the box when it comes to revenue generation. They rather wait to share the money allocated to them at the end of the month and wait for the following month. |

Odua4life:Unknown to you because you ain't educated you won't know that the revenue of Lagos would plummet if it's not part of Nigeria. It's a gateway to importation. Lagos benefits from Rivers state than Rivers benefits from Lagos, Oil and gas activities done in Rivers and it's environs finds itself into Lagos meanwhile it's done in my state. If Lagos goes Rivers state ilwill be the beneficiary because Rivers has everything Lagos has but has what Lagos doesn't have . |
