My friend's brother sent him two phones (one iPhone 16 and one iPhone XR) from USA through DHL The package has been on transit for sometime now. The issue now is that he received a message from DHL today stating he has to pay N853,109.81 as the custom fee before it can be cleared. I wonder why you guys are members of nairaland, We have thrashed this issues times without number, You need fright forwarders to ship in items from USA,don't try to form smart by using DHL,FedEx,ups,Aramex,those guys are the worst. They would rip you off, They have collabo with customs to rip Nigerians off. Best you can do,tell your brother to write DHL from his end to return his item since they can't deliver it. Right on time. Been a few months since the last one. It never fails. Lol. That price don dey come down o; congratulations. Few months ago, the person with his own iPhone 15 or so said 1.something million, when naira still was less than 1,500 to dollar. Alright, lets wait small for anoda maga to come cry him own. My own was 2022, 117k for yeye phones dey no even buy much till today. I can't wait to be done with this useless phone/laptop/tablet biz. What a waste. OP: You go pay o. DHL doesn't touch customs fees. As a matter of fact, you can directly to customs account and give them your payment evidence, and they'll delivery your items The charges is based on estimated duty of what you are shipping. 9 Likes |

OP. How much was declared on the invoice? Add that to the shipping cost. Multiply by the prevalent exchange rate then you can see that the bad economy/exchange rate is what is killing you and not DHL. This amount might even change if you dont pay on time and the exchange rates increases again 6 Likes |

When you hear customs declaring revenue, you think these monies are going to the courier companies? These are the money that the government boast with. Bad government, bad policies affects all facet of our lives Breakdown; Assuming your phone cost 2000USD, shipping 17USD. Total cost is 2017usd converted to Naira at 1663 current exchange rate is 3,384,605.90. Phones attract 10% duty, 7,5% vat and 5% levy - see the bad government policies. Duty - 338,460.59, VAT is 297,463.20(a percentage of duty amount + total cost), Levy is 169,230.29 = 805,154.08 Note that those are the main charges. You also have supplementary charges such as CIS, ETLS & Surcharge which will amount to the remaining difference. Too tired to calculate those ones. The smaller logistics companies are not any better, I sent an iphone 12 to Nigeria through GiG Logistics since Nov of 2023, the phone was never delivered... When I asked them to return the shipping fee of $100, they asked for the IMEI of the phone that I sent to them with it's box a year ago. 1 Like 1 Share |

DHL are known for charging exorbitant rates even before the spike in exchange rates. I once imported some items using DHL and paid through my nose. Since then, I avoid them like a plaque. 5 Likes |
