I wonder why people always talk down on things they have no idea about, I work with FedEx and there's reason behind the price given to you by DHL, import duty has sky rocketed, and chrismas is on it way which the security personnel will take it advantage...i saw a thread couples of month ago on this site, same clearing issue, and it was resolved...You can chat me on 09057678684

Please educate us more. I've been thinking of importing a new alternator for my car because there are too many fakes in Nigeria. How do I initiate the process of using freight forwarders? Can it be done online?

I do ship from the USA specifically engine oil and other items check my signature for more.
From time to time I help my customers with auto parts like alternator, ac compressor etc. You can ship the items to my house and I will ship to Nigeria with my other goods .

You say they are the worst because they are abiding to your local laws. These companies are not of Nigeria origin you do not expect them to belittle their standards because your government have placed in stringent laws to the detriment of her people

You have a point here, but customs charge thise companies duties based on the cost of the item. Calculatethe duty only those items and convert to Naira, you'd find out it may actually ve rather real cost.
Not every high price is a reap off.
Your suggestion to use fright forwarders is cheaper

You talked about import license. Lol those are given to some selected few for premium products. Eg medication, aircraft parts and not luxury items. I know you don’t know, I am knowledgeable in this business.

That amount for those 2 phones is okay. Though the OP guy could have sent it through another cheaper means. However, that DHL price is very reasonable. DHL will pay duty on the two phones which also will consist of the freight. Then shipping and clearance money, now considerable the amount also used to insure those two phones cos the sender probably disclose the real price he bought the phones to DHL before sending. DHL will check the value and bill you so as to pay the correct duty to Nigeria custom. Also remember that Naira has been bastardized to the dollar. That duty is fair and very fair indeed....just approximately $510 to clear the two phones......abeg, quickly go pick the phones before the dollars to Naira vex enter N2k per dollar....DHL wouldn't take it easy with you o cos the higher the dollar the higher you go pay for clearance..go to tomorrow morning amd pick your sweet phones....

The issue now is that he received a message from DHL today stating he has to pay N853,109.81 as the custom fee before it can be cleared.
I think there's something fishy here because I haven't seen nor experienced this before

Unfortunately nothing fishy, that's how those courier company charge, you may end up not getting the package due to the exorbitant amount

You are yet to even calculate freight.....if the actual rate is given to the OP....he would abandon the phones at DHL just like many importers have abandoned their beautiful vehicles here in Tincan Port....
And imagine that these your calculations is for just 1pc of the phone. The 2pcs will definitely run the OP mad..... 😂 😂

Phones attract 10% duty, 7,5% vat and 5% levy - see the bad government policies.
Duty - 338,460.59, VAT is 297,463.20(a percentage of duty amount + total cost), Levy is 169,230.29 = 805,154.08
Note that those are the main charges. You also have supplementary charges such as CIS, ETLS & Surcharge which will amount to the remaining difference. Too tired to calculate those ones.

I bought some cupholders for my CHR from ebay. The next thing, those criminals customs at NAHCO sent me a message to come and pay 350k.

They do these in conjunction with the courier companies. Its a huge racket. Las las, they reduced it a little after a lot of wahala.

The money, I suspect entered their pocket. Those guys are criminals.

I was reliably inform that they place premium on jewelleries, phones and other high end stuff like expensive wristwatches. They believe they are yahoo-sourced wnd they want to take their share.
