When you hear customs declaring revenue, you think these monies are going to the courier companies? These are the money that the government boast with. Bad government, bad policies affects all facet of our lives

Breakdown;

Assuming your phone cost 2000USD, shipping 17USD. Total cost is 2017usd converted to Naira at 1663 current exchange rate is 3,384,605.90.

Phones attract 10% duty, 7,5% vat and 5% levy - see the bad government policies.
Duty - 338,460.59, VAT is 297,463.20(a percentage of duty amount + total cost), Levy is 169,230.29 = 805,154.08
Note that those are the main charges. You also have supplementary charges such as CIS, ETLS & Surcharge which will amount to the remaining difference. Too tired to calculate those ones.

Bad government policies the people suffer.

You need fright forwarders to ship in items from USA,don't try to form smart by using DHL,FedEx,ups,Aramex,those guys are the worst.
They would rip you off,
They have collabo with customs to rip Nigerians off.

Best you can do,tell your brother to write DHL from his end to return his item since they can't deliver it.

Don't bother stressing your self,

No matter how you run am,you go still pay like 400k or more.

My friend's brother sent him two phones (one iPhone 16 and one iPhone XR) from USA through DHL
The package has been on transit for sometime now.
The issue now is that he received a message from DHL today stating he has to pay N853,109.81 as the custom fee before it can be cleared.
I think there's something fishy here because I haven't seen nor experienced this before

You are yet to even calculate freight.....if the actual rate is given to the OP....he would abandon the phones at DHL just like many importers have abandoned their beautiful vehicles here in Tincan Port....

Yes having a comparative advantage to those who import. Imagine taxing something we don’t manufacture at that level.

To alleviate the sufferings of the people, government should reduce the duty rates. I only found out yesterday that Levy is even taxed on phones. Imagine!!
They should also reduce the foreign exchange rate used in clearance it will solve a lot
