To understand it better, it was once a majority Christian nation.

Things changed in the 1970s when armed Palestinian refugees whom they had opened their nation for, set up military checkpoints to start fishing put Christians.The Muslim population of Lebanon also grew very fast and today are a majority.

There are 14 sects in Lebanon but the 3 largest are: Christian, Sunni and Shiite.

Hezbollah is Shiite. Iran funds Hezbollah and arms it. The Lebanese state is divided and weak. If the state was strong, there's no way Hezbollah would have become as powerful as it is.
