Prince Johnson, a former Liberian warlord and influential politician, has died at the age of 72. Family spokesperson Wilfred Bangura confirmed on Thursday morning that Johnson, who had been suffering from high blood pressure, passed away earlier in the day.

Johnson became a notorious figure during Liberia’s civil wars (1989–2003), a conflict that claimed over 200,000 lives, displaced more than one million people, and left thousands mutilated or raped. He rose to infamy in 1990 when his forces captured former president Samuel Doe. In widely circulated footage, Johnson was seen celebrating while his men tortured Doe, including mutilating him by cutting off his ear, before killing him.

Although Johnson later expressed regret for the incident and sought reconciliation with Doe’s family, he was named by Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission as among those recommended for prosecution for war crimes, including killings and rape. However, he was never brought to trial.

After the war, Johnson transitioned into politics and was elected as a senator for Nimba County in 2006. He played a pivotal role in Liberian presidential politics, backing Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in 2011, George Weah in 2017, and switching his support to Joseph Boakai in the 2023 election, where Boakai defeated Weah in a run-off.

That clip of Samuel Doe begging him passionately for his life as he ordered his troops to "cut him ear" is still reverberating till today. Very very ruthless man during the early days of the wars in Liberia, but unlike Charles Taylor his former colleague, he knew when to stop.

Good that he tried to make peace with the Doe family later on. Seemed like he genuinely wanted to do that as he was also said to have become "born again", but then, the deed was already done and the brutalities associated with that war and the way Samuel Doe was killed, will haunt Liberia for years.

Death is imminent to the mortal being. It is better to always leave a positive imprint as a lasting legacy while you breath. Prince Johnson, this the name you hear in Liberia those days and you shiver like a baby suffering from pneumonia.

This life sef. The video of him sitting quietly while his men mutilated and killed Samuel Doe is still fresh in my memories and very much available online.
Political and military intelligence has it that he had the backing of the American government but didn't know that he was being used. If you watched the video, he was tirelessly trying to get someone on the radio for the next move after Doe was captured. Analysts are of the opinion that it was the American Ambassador he was trying to reach on the radio but nothing was confirmed.
Liberia is yet to recover from that civil war of over 30 years ago.

Humans always wish everyone who dies to rest in Peace, but in the deep nature of sincerity, not everyone deserves to Rest in Peace.
Mostly many Politicians who have made million's to die under their watch, Either by war, insecurity or poverty.

I'll NEVER forget these images from Liberia in the 1990s. It happened right under the watch of Ecomog. It's still surreal to me.
