Do Patients Take Their Baths When Operated Upon? (Photo) by Extra30(op): 9:30am On Nov 29, 2024
Apologies for posting this Here!

firstly, I want to appreciate God for my Health. Since I was born(27yrs) till date, I've had no cause to fall sick and get admitted to the hospital for any reason. As a matter of fact, I have never been placed on Drugs by any doctor or visited a pharmacy to buy drugs prescribed by a doctor. No Bandages/Plasters.

Now, I have been wondering how patients cope when they are operated upon. You have a patient who is bedfasted and bedriddened due to surgery or any other form of sickness. As in, how do they bath and take care of their bodies when they are sick and can't leave the bed?
I can't imagine myself not taking my bath for a whole Day, let alone days and weeks and even months. I can't bathe once in a day. It must be at least twice, and at most, thrice in a day. Any day I don't bath before bed time, I'm finished. I must.
When u look at women for instance, they need to wash their private parts everyday and keep that area clean, so, what happens when they can't do so for a whole week or months?
In terms of Urinating and defecating, I have seen where pipes are connected to aid this process. But how do u lay on the hospital bed to pass out urine and excreta? Normally I can't be comfortable defecating when someone is watching me or knows that I'm defecating.

My heart will continue to go out to such patients. I empathize with them all and pray that we don't find ourselves in such situation. God will preserve our Healths.

Keep thanking God for your health. No one prays to be sick but it happens.

Yes sick people take their baths. If bedridden the nurses bath them on the bed. They are cleaned up too if they need to pass waste.

No one is watching you while you pass waste. That is why you have screens in the hospital. angry

Hmm.

Body wipes is what is used ..some may call it sponge bath.

https://www.quora.com/What-is-a-sponge-bath-in-contemporary-nursing-culture-The-sponge-is-no-longer-relevant-to-the-term-so-why-is-it-differentiated-from-a-bed-bath-or-any-other-bath-Shouldn-t-the-term-be-disregarded

The screens will shield anyone who has to do something discreet.

When someone is in such condition , bathing is not his priority. It is just like a woman in labour, unclothedness is not anything

It is not actually the job of nurses to give personal care to patients. Not at all.
I hope that one day,Nigeria will get it right in healthcare sector. The sector is managing to stay alive. Both govt and private.

You completely seal the points of incision and shower. Ensure water doesn't get in.

When you get bedridden you won't think of bathing, privacy nor good cloth, your priority is to get well and go home. Taking your bath is not compulsory it's just necessary and can be overlooked, people that live in dry parts of Kenya bath once a months and they are alive

My question to you is, id you are kidnapped how will you shower?

It is.

It's just that nurses in Nigerian think it's beneath them. They leave it to the relatives.

It is not the job of a nurse to do that.
It is the job of care assistants or nursing assistants which unfortunately Nigeria don't have.
Nurses can only do such in an emergency where the two are not present or on the job with a doctor where those two are not present.
It is not part of their duty.

In Nigeria, an average nurse do the job of three at the same time.

They have auxiliary nurses which is the same thing.

They teach nurses how to care for bedbound patients and how to care for and dress pressure sores that come with it. So it's on them to wash patients and assess the skin for themselves. Not alone of course but with assistance.

When you are operated on or when you go under the knife , taking a bath would be the least of your worries.

I've had 9 major surgeries so far, by major I mean surgeries were the odds were against me, but somehow I manage to pull through every time.

The last one was In February this year and frankly speaking I never knew I was going to survive, I was certain I was going to see Jesus this time. It lasted for 5 hours and I was fully awake and conscious but I didn't feel pain ( they said it's the new style of Anastasia used for major surgeries nowadays). Five hours later I was rolled out of the theater into my private ward and I woke up fully in the next three days. It turns out that once that kind of anastasia is used on you for surgery, after the surgery they'd give you another type of anastasia everyday so you can sleep off the pain for atleast 3 days.

So trust me, you wouldn't bath until the sore or wound is fully healed or until the doctor says it's ok for you to bath. All you'd be allowed to do is to clean your body with water soap and face towel.

I had operation in February this year, I started bathing last month.

Nurses don't wash patients my dear. Auxiliary nurses/ nursing assistants/ healthcare professionals= that's their job descriptions.
Not gonna go on merry go round with u.
If nurses do that in Nigeria, that does not mean it's the standard. Students nurses are trained to do that in their first year should they find themselves in a situation where they have to do that, that's all. Personal care no concern nurse. That is the standard. Read my first post again on this again and the clause i put on nigeria. Not gonna continue with this merry go round.
