That is a crude way of putting it, but Oshiomole is right. To industrialise, Nigeria needs more technical work force.

However, the socio-economic conditions and value system in nigeria does not give proper dignity and reward to such jobs, except on few occasions.
... Nigeria already has more technical force...for Nigeria to be industrialized ..a conducive environment for companies, industries to thrive is needed..like constant electricity light supply is needed, appreciate and strengthen of the naira and make the naira have value against the dollars , low interest rate, low costs of fuel, disel , good roads, high purchasing power of nigerians, fair tax system not multiple taxation

In engineering we have

Engineers

Technologist

Technician

Artisan

Different roles

We artisan design a building or pipe network, dams, bridges, will artisan design boilers, or mechanical system
Na lie.

Buildings, Utilities and whatever are designed by engineers and built by artisans.

Ok

Go and tell that to your grandchildren. Tell them to become bricklayers, mechanics and carpenters.

You have your son as Edo state commissioner of Health, if he was a bricklayer, would he be a commissioner?
he could probably become commissioner of work or labour base on his concentration.

1 person can be the brain behind the innovation, but it takes many skilled artisans and technicians to turn that innovation into commercial success. In otherwords, in any successful industrial setting, skilled hands (artisans, craftsmen, technocians etc) are needed more than engineers.

Been reading through this thread and it bizarre how almost everyone missed the point.
If you like have 100000thousand artisans if the economy is bad and their is no jobs, the artisans would be jobless.
Our useless leaders leave important issues and keep chasing shadows.

I know several friends and colleagues who have Bachelors degree in Engineering and they aslo acquired several practical technical skills yet they are unemployed.

Its still the same thing.
A subsistence farmer with hoe and cutlass and an agric engineer who uses tractors and other machinery are all artistans!
The only difference is that one of them uses technologies and machines to operate, but they are still artistans.

Nigerian politicians does not want to upgrade these artistans. If they do, them the politicians wont see avenue to loot again. They want you all to always be poor and downgraded so as you all can worship them.

Sad!
Kukutente23:
It's still engineers that will design and build machines for mass production
Bricklayers or iron benders don't do mass production. Your idea is like comparing a subsistence farmer with hoe and cutlass with an agric engineer who uses tractors and other machinery. Why are we unable to feed ourselves when agriculture is our largest employer of labour? The answer is that there are so many Bricklayer level farmers and so few agric technologist.
Oshiomole just mouthed nonsense and I'm shocked any youth will agree with him

I am guessing his children are technical workers.
Nigeria already has thousands of engineers who are teaching in secondary schools. It's not about needing more, it's about what you do with the ones you have.
And how does your opinion neglect the fact that blue collar jobs are essential to any economy?

You people need to read to understand comments before you respond.

In developed countries self-employed mechanics benefit from the robust economy. In contrast, Nigeria's cheap labor and low demand for skilled workers drive brain drain, as talented individuals seek better opportunities which leads many of them into yahoo.

If you had read to understand my comment, I clearly referred to the socio-economic conditions as one of the factors why the effect of such jobs are relegated.

So what new thing have you added other than listing out the poor socio-economic conditions I referred to?

This is pathetic. So to you, industrialisation is about building structures? You think that masons and reinforcement fixers will design sustainable industries and run them effectively and efficiently? So lack of these skilled workers is the reason companies are closing up in Nigeria.

You are indeed a clown.
People like you don't even know your left from right and still make noise with your heads up your posterior.

When you learn about blue collar jobs, hopefully you would cure your ignorance and stup1dity to a level where you can interact in a sane manner and not as a lout.

There are so many technical colleges, Polytechniques, and Universities of Technology littering all over Nigeria. Instead of equipping the institutions, retraining the lecturers, funding research institutions, and empowering those poor talents who have already shown their worth, these so-called leaders are clamouring for an additional technical college that will go the way of others. These clowns are only loyal to their bank accounts and accountable to their greed. They are indeed undertakers and devourers and not leaders. What a shame!

Re: We Need Bricklayers, Iron Benders In Nigeria, Not Varsity Products - Oshiomhole by ivandragon: 11:56am On Nov 29, 2024
smokinloud:
Nigeria's problem is complex. The reality is that the labor market for skilled technical workers is struggling, with many individuals lacking access to good jobs. This isn't just a matter of dignity and reward; it's a systemic problem that discourages people from pursuing technical careers in the first place.

Furthermore, the current system doesn't incentivize learning artisanship or technical skills. As a result, many young people are deterred from exploring these career paths. To industrialize, Nigeria needs a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of these issues, rather than just acknowledging the lack of dignity and reward for technical jobs.
Again, read to understand my comment.

I clearly referred to unfavourable socio-economic conditions as an impediment to industrialisation. So how is your point different from mine?

Are you ready to list all that is wrong with Nigeria on this case?

Oshiomole ia part and parcel of the problems in Nigeria.
Yes, we are in need of technologically minded people to join the industrialised nations of the world.
But our policy makers are not helping us.
Oshiomole was a governor of Edo state for eight years. Not a single technical college was established by his administration.

We need a little reorientation in Nigeria to help us get more prosperous and industrialised .

You mean the likes of Federal Universities of technologies?

The main problem is we Nigerians hardly want to struggle for the common good of this nation. We are mostly saboteurs. I can remember a headmaster of a technical secondary school who told his students to carry almost all the machines and hand tools that was bought for the students by the Federal government to his house. He stole almost every thing. That's how it plays out in all sectors. WE ARE OUR OWN PROBLEM.

Although SSCE certificate is the minimum requirement to seek for any office in Nigeria. But in this case, a carpenter and his likes can also be appointed to any government office that relates to their concentration if they can defend their work beyond layman's knowledge of it. Example is having college or technical certificate to back their claim.
