Churches And NGOs Next? Primate Ayodele Slams Tax Reform Bills by Editorialtimes(op): 9:48am On Dec 01, 2024
The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the proposed tax reforms in improving Nigeria's economic situation.

In a statement released by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, on Sunday, Primate Ayodele noted that while tax reform is a step in the right direction, its implementation is unlikely to deliver significant benefits.

He cautioned President Bola Tinubu to thoroughly review the initiative, highlighting concerns about potential misuse of the additional revenue.

“Tax reform is a good initiative and a great step, but it won’t be properly handled. The government will make money from it, but the critical question remains—will the funds be used appropriately?” Ayodele queried.

Churches and NGOs to Face Taxation

Primate Ayodele also warned that the reforms could extend to taxing churches and NGOs indirectly, sparking widespread opposition.

“As time goes on, churches and NGOs will also begin to pay taxes indirectly. This will meet stiff resistance, as many will oppose such measures,” he explained.

He emphasized the need for a careful approach to avoid undermining the reforms' intentions, stating that the current framework might lead to increased corruption without addressing core economic challenges.

Call for Pro-Poor Reforms

The cleric urged the government to focus on policies that directly improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians, emphasizing that public welfare should take precedence over revenue generation.

“I call on the government to prioritize reforms that make life better for the common man. The welfare of the people is more important than any other thing,” Ayodele added.

Concerns Over VAT Increase

According to Ayodele, the anticipated increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) under the reforms could burden citizens further without delivering tangible economic benefits.

VAT will be increased, but it won’t make the economy boom. This reform needs a proper review to ensure it doesn’t defeat its purpose,” he said.

The cleric’s comments come amid heightened public scrutiny over the government's ability to manage the nation’s economic challenges effectively.

The primate that has been making wrong predictions. Churches and mosques in Nigeria should pay taxes since the owners are using it to buy cars, jets and houses. Why not?

Government should extend tax collection to religious organizations.

They contribute 50% of the rot in the society.

You lots are just bitter!

It's not hard to see that you're speaking from the place bitterness for the church and pastors.

But let's allow reason rule, pastors collecting tithes are not your problem. Those who GIVE them the tithes to them are working adults who are fine and okay with paying your tithe. And they're doing it WHOLEHEARTEDLY. What exactly is your headache with that abeg? grin

YOUR REAL PROBLEM is the same government you are charging to collect taxes from churches. Those are the people robbing you. That's the government that deserves your backlash. They're the ones who forcefully, subtly, directly, and indirectly tax you for personal enrichment (with PITA, VAT, Stamp Duty, telcos, etc). But guess what? Your obsession is with pastors who don't have your money.

Make it make sense!

Imagine, with all the hardship faced by Nigerians what concerns this Man is all about how Churches are going to taxed.

How on earth will religious House be making those huge money in the first place if they are not also setup to run like a business venture?
Since they are making those huge money they shouldn't be afraid to pay tax, everybody are out there to make money, govt also need money to run the affairs of the Country.

If there's anything Nigeria needs, it's a transparency reform bill and prolly justice reform.

You can't keep taking and taking when the problem is with mismanagement and corruption.

I don't have to tell you to mark my words. You know this reform will only enrich some few people in government and in the tax agencies. Right?

Baba needs to be calming down. A true man of God does not talk too much and carelessly.

It is the flamboyant, indecent, and boastful and unaccountable traits of our today's religious leaders that has made people to begin to challenge their purpose and essence.

Samuel, Elisha, Elijah, Moses etc. . Lived like men they were shepherding, and shared resources and burdens evenly amongst themselves.

People are challenging the givings of tithes and offerings today coz you guys are leaving lives of emperors and not servants. Change your ways sir.

True power and honor of God flows when the pathways of old are rekindled.

Fallacy! But I'll help you.

Yahoo is a crime in Nigerian criminal code. Most will pass for "obtaining by false pretense."

Unlike giving in churches, victims of fraud did NOT "GIVE." They were obtained from in one form of false pretense or another (i.e. selling a fraudulent property).

If you hate fraud, face fraud. Those of us who pay tithes and offering aren't being scammed.
