US counterterrorism officials have flagged a new terror threat.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, may be rearing its ugly head again. It may return with a new caliphate. But this time, the location might be in West Africa.

The Sahel region is a terror hotspot. Countries like Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have been dealing with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State for about a decade. And these terror groups are steadily making gains. American officials fear that they could capture territory and use it to launch attacks on Europe and even the US mainland.

The MAJOR jihadist group in Burkina Faso is: The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) OR in Arabic language it's known as Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM).

3] Official: Jihadis Abduct 50 Women in Burkina Faso
=>https://www.voanews.com/a/official-jihadis-abduct-50-women-in-burkina-faso-/6920972.html
At least 50 women were abducted by Islamic extremists in Burkina Faso’s northern Sahel region last week, a local official said Monday.

The kidnappings occurred January 12 and 13, 2023 approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the town of Arbinda in Soum province, Lt. Col. P.F. Rodolphe Sorgho, the governor of Sahel, said in a statement.

The women were kidnapped while in the countryside gathering wild fruit, he said.

Jihadi violence linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group has overrun Burkina Faso, killing thousands and displacing nearly 2 million people in the West African nation. The failure of successive governments to stop the fighting has caused widespread discontent and triggered two military coups in 2022, the second against the first military regime to seize power.
Re: "US Warns Of ISIS Rising In West Africa | Vantage With Palki Sharma" by Konquest(op):
Half of Mali, half of Burkina Faso, and a significant part of Niger especially outside the capital cities are already under the control of the Jihadi terror groups especially JNIM which has its headquarters in Mali but had crossed into Burkina Faso and has rapidly taken over more than half of the Burkinabe territory from the government forces.

It's time for the United States, other Western powers, West Africa (ECOWAS) and the African Union to get involved and act decisively with advanced military hardware and satellite tracking devices to root out theseterrorists.
Re: "US Warns Of ISIS Rising In West Africa | Vantage With Palki Sharma" by Konquest(op):
The military coups in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso haven't helped either. These young military coupists thought Russian involvement in helping them would work but things have grown WORSE security-wise.

Just recently, Aleppo in Syria was retaken by rebels again after the heavy Russian involvement in Syria. The gains have been viciously reversed because the Russians are involved in the own war with Ukraine.
Re: "US Warns Of ISIS Rising In West Africa | Vantage With Palki Sharma" by Konquest(op):
If this situation escalates to the point that more territories are taken over by these criminal jihadist terror groups represented by JNIM and other ISIS-related gangs leading to the fall of the capitals of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, then the Northern parts of Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Benin, Togo, and Indeed West Africa would become fully destabilized.
The refugees from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso would come flooding in torrents into Nigeria and put pressure on resources.

Those of us who have observed the optics on the jihadist terror gains since Russian military personnel were invited have been vindicated!

The Russian presence ONLY gave false hopes to these young military coupists while Mali and Burkina Faso have since LOST more than half of their territories to the Islamists since the coups took place.

The Russians have been distracted by the Russian-Ukraine War, so, do NOT have the time for fuller involvements in curbing the cancerous jihadi terror attacks and territorial gains in the Sahelian region of West Africa.

The warning by the United States intelligence agencies CLEARLY shows how dire the situation in the West African Sahel is.

Someone up there is asking the US to get involved in Africa. When the US does get involved, you lot start spinning the narrative, saying they're just trying to recolonize Africa and sponsor terrorism.

Look, you folks got to stop crying to the US about every little thing. You've got the Russians hanging about in some parts of Africa, but, they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Under their watch, you've got terrorists and other groups set up shop. You can't have it both ways. You can't hate on the West, bring in the Russians, and then expect them(USA) to sort out all your problems.

The US is a global superpower for a reason. It's not just about propaganda and anti-West policies. It takes planning, years of military building, and a solid strategy. The Russians just can't compete with that.

Remember when I said it months ago, without the US and its allies, Africa's gonna be a breeding ground for terrorist groups. Russia's just toothless, can't do squat to stop these terrorists!

It's the United States that's raising a major alarm right here and they know FULL well the dangers of having this insurgency spreading further beyond Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic. As the U.S. Intelligence CLEARLY states, a major jihadist caliphate in the Sahelian region of West Africa would be deadly to the security of Europe and direct deadly terror attacks on United States' soil can also be easily launched from West Africa. So, it's ONLY a matter of time before the United States will get involved again with the support of ECOWAS and the AU. I'm NOT the one calling for the U.S. involvement, it's the U.S. who are concerned about their own safety and that of Europe and West Africa, so, this is a big deal.

I've got years of knowledge in "intelligence analysis." You seem to be implying (wrongly) in your post here that this thread was started by someone who blames the U.S. for her involvements in curbing global terror. Far from it, I have believed for decades now that the United States (alongside her allies) is an integral part of the equation in solving the terrorism situation around the world along with others. It's NOT been smooth sailing BECAUSE countries like to be politically correct by not applying maximum force while speaking of human rights, BUT it's time to go full throttle by using deadlier weapons against these criminals who clearly do NOT want world peace. It's just a matter for the U.S. (and her allies) to CLEARLY articulate their military objectives to the media and the global public to avoid WRONG interpretations of any future military actions in the fight against Islamist insurgencies in West Africa or elsewhere. Period.

Good to see we're bout on the same page. Islamic terrorism's a blight on society, and it's high time the world came together to stamp it out.

We can't let these extremists spread their toxic ideology and wreak havoc on innocent lives.

Indeed, those criminals hiding under lame Wahhabism and/or radical Shiite piety are sick people that do NOT deserve any space on earth in the grand scheme of things. Recently, the "British patriots" have gone full throttle on many occasions by ensuring that they monitor and disrupt any open air public preachings and incitements by radical Islamists in the UK who they say are trying to destroy the United Kingdom. These guys have been sussed out already by normal thinking people worldwide who are tired of them hiding under religion to perpetrate the WORSE kinds of disgusting evil (such as taking women prisoners of war, impregnating them and turning them to their wives whether in Syria or Somalia or West Africa!)

Russia has begun withdrawing ships from its naval base in Tartus, Syria, after a rapid advance by Islamist rebel forces that the Syrian army, led by President Bashar al-Assad, is unable to contain, according to Naval News.

The link report above ties in with the security specifics on this thread. If the Russians have to pull back as can be seen, then those 3 West African countries of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso (under the near-total control of terror Jihadists groups like JNIM) are NOT a top priority for them except the Russian-Ukraine War ends as soon as possible.

This video right below details the report on one of the major deadly terror attack by JNIM in Burkina Faso back in August 2024 [just 4 months ago]. Ghana shares direct boundaries just to the South of Burkina Faso. If Burkina Faso's capital falls, that is when it will hit everyone, including Ghana.

An armed group linked to al-Qaeda, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has claimed responsibility for what it says was an attack that killed up to 200 people and injured at least 140 in central Burkina Faso.

The attack took place on Saturday in the region of Barsalogho, about 40km (25 miles) north of the strategic town of Kaya, which analysts said is home to the last standing force protecting the capital, Ouagadougou.
Fighters opened fire on teams of people digging trenches designed to protect security outposts. Several soldiers were missing after the attack, and the attackers took weapons and a military ambulance.
