Old English Only The Igbos Still Use In Nigeria by blacksam01(op): 5:45pm On Dec 03, 2024
Ever wondered what words are only steadily used by just the igbos in Nigeria... Guess what, they are all English words, but old English ones...

They are as follows:

1. Knicker which is an old British English name for shorts.

2. Yard. They use this to describe their home, instead of the more now popular word "house" .

3. Shed. Although the igbos has changed the real old meaning of this word, which is a storage house in the garden or near a house, however, they still use it to describe their business location instead of the new and popular word "store"...

You don buy 5 yards of material for Idumota before? After you buy am, you come share am with your neighbour for backyard?

We grew up with knicker but because Nigeria imitates both U.S. and UK, we mix them. Now we use shorts or pants, mainly American language.

Language evolves over time. Some Nigerian words are now adopted in the Oxford dictionary.

Bro, I know the history behind those words. NO ONE IS TRYING TO PLAY ANY STUPID GAMES. AKARA AND MOI-MOI ARE YORUBA WORDS. I DON'T GIVE A FVCK ABOUT ANY STUPID CONTEST YOU INVOLVE YOURSELF IN.

Your choice of words tell me about who is writing.

Are those words Nigerian words or nothuh

They are not Nigerian, they are Yoruba. Go and argue with OED to remove all words there you don't like. At least they have their dictionary.

Calling it Nigerian English is stripping them of their identity, you're implying that the words are borrowed from English and I'm correcting you that those words existed pre colonial era. Akara in yoruba translate to the food we count to buy while moin-moin translate to the food that sticks to the teeth , as you can't eat moin-moin without the particles remaining in your teeth. Now tell me, how does this have anything to do with English?

If the British could borrow French words to add to their dictionary, despite their rivalry, what is the raison d'etre?

Guy, your comparison is not valid here,If the word borrowed is originally french. But these are yoruba words. IT IS NOT BORROWED. YOU SOUND LIKE SOMEONE INTELLIGENT. ACT LIKE IT.

Okay, no need to be upset. I am sorry if you think I did. I never did.

I am a lifelong learner. I know about your historical use but for the purposes of this thread, I don't think there is need to take out those words because whether we like it or not, it is used in Nigeria and that's how the OED took it. There are words borrowed from various languages and used today even if Hausa have a name for it or Tivs have one.

Accept my apology
