Why waiting for rain water.
Instead use irrigation system to water your farm.

You want to plant cassava in peak of dry season?

That is betnaija oddly you are playing with your resources
Some intended cassava farmers are yet to even prepare their farm land in Sokoto and they still plan to do so between now and January without irrigation.

It will go. I have been observing the dew since the rains stopped.

The morning dew will sustain the cassava so long as the stems are fresh and not dried ones..Proceed
The dry season is just starting. You didn't put Into consideration the land type and topography of his farmland where he wants to plant the cassava. This will determine the amount of morning due and the survivability of the stems while the dry season will last. If the land is located on a low area, with good moisture holding capacity he can go ahead. Else, i'll say the risk is not worth it. The Ideal thing is to wait for the new planting season if the land lacks that above properties that can sustain the stem.

In my village some people plant theirs by January. So it would be looking dried and dying until the rains come. Then it would blossom.

Truth is, cassava is a rugged crop, it can survive anywhere. It doesn't die like that.
Isn't that risky?

Have you confirmed that your village and his location are in the same ecological zone to conclude it will grow.
You might be right but he asked an open ended question.

So tell me the ecological zones in Nigeria (Excluding the desert North) where Cassava planted in December can not grow? Am sure you heard me reference states on flood plain in Nigeria which shows they have similar ecology

Okay.
Unless you're planting beside a river bed, I would advice you wait till next year.
Re: Can I Still Plant Cassava In Early December? by ogaemma: 2:35pm On Dec 03, 2024
I Read from the comments session that your farm is in Ogun state.
We are already in December.
Do you have a regular means of irrigation in your farm?
If your answer is no, I would advise you not plant casava now.
Wait till January after the first rain 🌧️.
This is my submission.
Good Luck 👍

If the water table isn't far from surface dig a well and be using surface pump and hose to water the farm.

If water is readily available, you can plant practically anything, the season notwithstanding.

No venture, no success!

Go ahead, success is guaranteed!

Ask the locals in the community
Re: Can I Still Plant Cassava In Early December? by GooddPeople: 3:13pm On Dec 03, 2024
The truth is that, your location do not encourage that. If it were rivers, bayelsa or Edo and Delta states, it will be advisable.

Unless there's an irrigation in place, he shouldn't. Why should he plant cassava in peak dry season like December. Nah wah ooo

Exactly the point...a definite yes or a no should not be answer to an open ended question.

You should only do that on a swamp land otherwise, it'll surely dry up!!!

What induces "rooting in a cassava stem? What is the effect of your observed morning 'dew' on subsoil solution?

Do you know the consequences of your quack advisory on a failed 10,000 cassava plants/ha?

The whole of October and early November would have been perfect, but the slowpoke waited till December to ask; And off course you showed.

Have you heard of crop calendar?
What if he has irrigation?
Re: Can I Still Plant Cassava In Early December? by Augustine2244(m): 4:26pm On Dec 03, 2024
Yes, you can.Cassava is a hardy drought resistant and tolerant crop which will thrive even in semi arid regions.
The cassava plants can survive by capturing water from morning mist and night.
Cassava is such a hardy crop that stem cuttings will sprout immediately on contact with moisture in the air, and will continue, while absorbing water from dew and mist in the dry season.
Hundreds of millions of people across Tropical Asia, Latin America and Africa depend on cassava as one of their major staple crops.
In these regions, cassava cultivation supports livelihood and generates income.
It's very easy to care for in cultivation, requiring less work.

It’s not advisable wait till next year when rain started

What if he has irrigation?
If he had irrigation in his plans; the words "dry season, December and doubts about the survival of the cassava plots" would not show up.

My fierce reaction emanated from regretful sobbing of Agri-preneurs from wrong consultancies. Huge resources and livelihoods have been lost/damaged deu to wrong advisory.

Nah it isn't. It would survive on the January early morning dew pending when the rains would come.

Not so smart "Augustine". Many of you are missing the point.
To establish a new cassava population on any soil; you need the following:
1. Place your matured, frest stem with btw 5 to 7 nodes either in a water solution or soil with adequate moisture
2. The stored food reserve in the stem will undergo so many metabolic processes in the presence of absolved moisture to initiate the rooting process preparatory to the young plants feeding from the soil nutrients in solution by absorption, not by chewing CHO, NPK, Ca, Mg , S and other micro nutrients.
3. Useful microorganisms (VAM Fungi) can't survive without subsoil moisture
4. Newly planted cassava stem (completely buried horizontally or half buried vertically) can not utilize Augustine's mist, fog or dew ; there are no leaves on planted stems
5. If I ask you to stand in the current prevailing sunlight for 24 hrs; you will end up in the hospital. Talk more of cassava stem
6. Have u assessed soil temperature values recently? They are over r 45'C to half boiling point of water.

When your cassava stems are planted in October to early November with about 2-3 adequate rainfalls; a quick establishment of stems( above ground leaves and below ground roots ) are achieved.

With about 2-3 weeks of established stems before December, the drought tolerance quality of stem is triggered to see them through before the next season.

Augustine, please farm cassava next season on a real plot not on Google plots.

Gracias!

I leave ib the forest hinterlands. Shut up. Every day, truck loads of cassava stems are moved to the sites even today
Re: Can I Still Plant Cassava In Early December? by liver123(m): 6:14pm On Dec 03, 2024
If there is still moisture in the soil that can just gravitate the plants to germinate, go ahead casava doesn't need rain to survive once it has germinated

Mumu Man!

This is the harvest season for cassava and coincidentally the best period for procurement of cuttings (cassava clones/planting materials)

Procured stems are not planted in the fields now but stored in jute bags under shades with constant watering to keep them alive for early rains in January.

If you dey Ibadan , and so what? I did all my degrees there in UI; where did u school m0ron?
