Paraman:Why did federal government construct a rail from Abuja to Kaduna, from Lagos to Ibadan and did not do the same from port Harcourt to Enugu? The road that connects benue to Enugu is not motorable, most of federal roads in Enugu plus other south east states are death traps, why is that? |

LegendHero:I don't get you o. When did Lagos become capital of Nigeria On the part of infrastructure, you're correct that Lagos has as much infrastructure as other parts of the country. You're also correct that Lagos has always been a prosperous place even before colonial rule. But you can't discount the fact that Lagos was helped by federal presence to achieve its present economic status. Look at Abuja for example. It has spent far less years than Lagos and you can see how it has been transformed from a village to an urban city that other parts that existed before it can't compete with. Federal presence has a lot of influence in a unitary Republic like Nigeria |

Kukutente23:When we use Nigeria context, we can go far back as 1914 amalgamation. That was when Lagos became the capital. Meaning bringing the united South + North protectorate. On the part of infrastructure, you're correct that Lagos has as much infrastructure as other parts of the country. Federal presence has a lot of influence in a unitary Republic like NigeriaNo sensible person will say the influence is not there. But if you look at it, Lagos and Abuja have different story. Most part of Lagos, infact over 80% was former western Region. It was being administered by Awolowo and it was built with the commonwealth of the Yoruba people and minorities in western region. When Awo was building the Ikeja industrial estate, cocoa plant in Ogba, industrial estate in Ilupeju, and most of the Odua investment asset in Lagos (Western Region), no one ever said that stretch of land is the capital. Abuja FCT is like a barren land which is largely virgin and we planned it and built it up as the capital. Let’s say tomorrow, Niger state is added to Abuja to create “Abuja State”, is it then proper to say Niger was developed by Nigeria money? While it’s true that Abuja has influence on it, it is also a great disservice saying “Nigeria built it”. That is my own argument. Differentiate “Lagos state” from “Lagos”. The argument most people mention is that because of port, third mainland bridge, and airport,; then it automatically mean Nigeria built Lagos. Did Nigeria not build same or more infrastructure in other region? If we relocate the FCT to Nnewi tomorrow, can we say Nigeria built Awka using the argument of Anambra state. So why should the first thing be Nigeria built Lagos when FCT was just less than 10/20% of the area that made up Lagos.

Bestmanfornow:this is a clearer reason why we need the bill, with all this industrialization you showed here enugu is not even top 5 in states paying tax, this means the companies are either not paying tax or someone is diverting the money. so if whatever generated in enugu is used to develop enugu. then enugu will be better off. |

iwaeda:This bill must be passed! Also, everything needed to make other ports to work must also be pushed. Anything to make other regional airports to work in full capacity must be pushed. Let every state hustle for their money. Agriculture alone is massive. U can make serious money out of it. Can anyone pls link me up with this man here, I want us to debate. I think most northerners are just sick in their head. Like, u just wake up and marry 4 wives and birth too many kids and wait for oil and gas from southern Nigeria to pay for ur life style while we dont take a dime from ur gold? Thunder fire una. I never liked Tinubu but u see this bill, it must pass. If Tinubu pushes this bill, i will vote him in second term so that he dismantle more useless structures we have in this country. Nigeria must be returned to true federal state. How will u destroy alcohol and still take money from alcohol? pls, does that even make sense to any human being? How do these guys reason up there in the north? Somone from the north should pls reply me. How do u guys reason? How can alcohol be Haram but the money generated from alcohol is not haram? richmond500:They don't even know what to say again? What disparity is he talking about? Who received Humongous NBILLIONS Money From Federation Accounts - every 4- Months,on the People's behalf? Same Patami( a former Minister) was saying ' aspects of the Tax Laws ' yet he couldn't set his own Opinions on what is right! That is Deception! Same for Zulum, all are not fought coming - Straight! Northerners love to deceive themselves, with Very Few Exceptions! Too bad. Anyway, the Red Chamber( Senators) have passed the Bill- as they know,it will benefit All the States, and is only if the Northern States Governors - don't want to be Thoughtful to the People of the North - as they are Playing Politics With Economic Issues. |

LegendHero:I was shocked when you wrote that Lagos was not yet capital in 1921. Lagos has been capital since before the amalgamation and it enjoyed a lot of advantages as a result of that. The Lagos Ilorin rail for example was built by the southern protectorate. It was also because of its status that most exports and imports went through the Lagos ports even in the colonial days. Like I said, Lagos has always been prosperous even before the colonialists came. There's no doubt about that. But it is untrue to claim that Nigeria did not contribute massively to what Lagos is today No sensible person will say the influence is not there. But if you look at it, Lagos and Abuja have different story.Where's the cocoa plant today? The ports were built with federal money. Same with the airport, stadium, the 3 bridge linking the mainland with island etc. You're correct that Awolowo did fantastic job with the part of Lagos under Western control but you must also acknowledge that federal presence was not limited to only the island and mainland areas. Apapa as you pointed out was under the western region yet the federal govt built, maintained and expanded the ports there. What about festac? That area was taken over under OBJ in preparation for festac 77 and it became what it is today. Same with Lagos Ibadan expressway. It was built by the federal govt. So to act as if Lagos was solely developed by the western regional govt is dishonesty. Lagos can't be compared to Abuja in terms of development. Abuja has actually gained a lot more than Lagos did in terms of federal support but I'm pointing out to you that Abuja presently is rivalling Lagos in terms of infrastructure and commerce even with its relatively shorter period of being federal capital when we all know it was almost literally a jungle before it was chosen as the new site for FCT. I'm using that to show you the power and influence that comes with being FCT. Abuja today generates the second highest VAT after Lagos and also usually has the second largest budget in the states after Lagos. |
| Re: Tax Bills Will Deepen North-south Economic Disparities – Arewa Media by LegendHero(m): 8:50pm On Dec 04, 2024 |
Kukutente23:The reason why the import went through Lagos axis was because it is a standard trade route right from way back and because of the seaport. It is the same way the Brits built rail in other countries they colonized, it is the same way they constructed railway from Sekondi to Tarkwa in Ghana in the 1890s to transfer gold. Nigeria did not contribute massively to Western region axis of Lagos more than what they contributed in every other state in this federation. That is my own argument. If you say Nigeria contribute massively to the part of Lagos that is the FCT, I agree. If you say the influence of the FCT is felt in Ikeja, I also agree to that. But I disagree when you say Nigeria contributed massively to the development of Ikeja and etc. What did they do in Ikeja that was not done in Kano and Anambra? Where's the cocoa plant today?I just laugh at what you are calling “building”. —Nigeria FG built the port in the South south —Nigeria FG build the two bridges in Anambra/Delta called the first and second River Niger bridge —Nigeria built several longer highway in the North —Federal government built lot of housing estates across the country too. Lagos was hosting a world event and that led to Festac 77 in the first place. If the event hold in Kano, they would have built the same in Kano. Lagos and Abuja are miles apart. The people in Lagos and what drives the economy is totally different from what drives Abuja economy. You can’t compare the two. There were many instances where Ogun state generated almost same as the IGR of Abuja during Amosun time. I am not saying Ogun has resources than Abuja but I am just telling you how far Lagos is to Abuja in stuffs like this. Infact Oyo generated more VAT than Abuja in August 2024. Aside the real estate and government patronage, nothing dey Abuja economy.

LegendHero:There's nothing like standard route If we're going to go the standard route, the shortest route to the north from the south is through river Niger terminating at Baro river in Niger state. That's the route the colonialists first used to supply the north till they built Apapa port and started using Lagos to Kano for ease of administration. Again, you can tell me under which region infrastructure was built by FG at the size we have in Lagos. The most economically virile part of Lagos today is the part that was formerly FCT. It is also dishonest to use just one month to judge vat collection. This is the vat tabulation for ten months in 2021. You can easily see that fct is second after Lagos.
