Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan revealed shocking news at the 2024 Zuma Film Festival, confirming that Netflix has stopped commissioning new Nigerian Originals. Afolayan disclosed that he was fortunate to have secured a third season for his hit series Anikulapo, while all other Nollywood projects in development were cancelled.

By working together, we can create a thriving ecosystem that promotes Nigerian creativity, supports local talent, and provides consumers with access to high-quality, legitimate streaming services.
I think is high time we also have our own streaming platforms for sports, movies, entertainment if we get the right stakeholders and passion but alaba boys no go allow us drink water drop cup, but God pass them if we can establish robust copyright laws and enforcement mechanisms, educate consumers about the importance of supporting legitimate streaming platforms and collaborate with stakeholders, including content creators, distributors, and government agencies, to develop a sustainable digital entertainment industry.

Netflix has become boring, so many Nigerians aren't renewing their subscriptions. This probably has a part to play in their recent decision

Wow, a move that would yield really negative consequences for our industry development.

Economy don hit them badly. How can a nation of over 180 million people have only about 200k active subscribers? Even that number is questionable given recent economic trends.

I think I now understand why many Nigerian movie producers and their audience ran to YouTube. YouTube is Netflix biggest competitor in Nigeria and that's because YouTube is free (with ads of course). So, Nigerians are neither subscribing on YouTube nor Netflix to see their Nollywood movies. Buying data is already by the grace of God. Make YouTube premium ($13/monthly) mandatory to a Nigerian audience and watch Nigerians return to NTA with the speed of light.

Dstv is not even an option because both the producer and the audience are not willing to go back to Egypt (i.e., decoders and cable TV).

Re: Netflix Stops Buying Nigerian Content - Kunle Afolayan by smokinloud(m):
Nigerian youths need to wake up and take responsibility for their future. Instead of constantly blaming politicians like Tinubu for the country's problems, they should focus on finding solutions and contributing to the nation's growth. It's alarming that with a population of over 200 million, we're still reliant on foreign innovation in our film industry - a sector that should be thriving with local innovations and talents.
Re: Netflix Stops Buying Nigerian Content - Kunle Afolayan by Sheuns(m):
This is a huge blow to Nigerian producers. Netflix is the biggest buyer of their content.

Now they have to go back to cinemas, which sadly doesn’t earn as much as Netflix.

Streaming platforms indigenous may not work as well as Netflix because there’s no indigenous platform that can pay in USD talk more of millions.

This isn't a good news. Netflix provided the avenue for Nigeria's films industry to be showcased to the world.

Producers may perhaps explore other avenue.

You still haven't learned anything from this news. Which Nigerian streaming platform will give you access to over 4,000 premium and multi-million Naira movies and blockbusters for less than 5k a month?

Well, since you want an alternative, movie producers can go back to dstv, where premium subscribers are expected to pay over 15k a month for low quality and low budget movies. How about that?

NTA and TVC are other alternatives though!

MadamVanessa:
shocked

This is not true for Nollywood movies on Netflix.

It's clear that the current state of Nollywood is underwhelming. The storylines have become predictable and lack depth, making it easy to guess the ending before the movie even starts.

I want to emphasize that my criticism is not directed at any particular tribe, but rather at the industry as a whole. However, I do think that the influx of southwest influence in Nollywood lately has contributed to its decline in global reputation. The industry had gained international recognition and respect when it was all Igbos affairs, but it seems to have lost its way in recent years.
Re: Netflix Stops Buying Nigerian Content - Kunle Afolayan by FameGlory(f): 6:46pm On Dec 04, 2024
Why won't they cancel it.

When majority of our Nollywood movies lack strong storyline.

No plot
No story
No message

Our movies just show breast, butt, good looks with just one single common storyline.

When it comes to storyline, e no dey pass love stories and juju.

No creativity.

No moral message.

They should go and upload it on their YouTube channel and stop disturbing Netflix managers.

Nigerian Movie producers need to think outside the box. Do something different. I was even thinking by now, our movies would enter BET. But no.

I'm a Scriptwriter yet I don't like watching most Nigerian movies because I can always predict the end.
