EXCLUSIVE: King's College London In Panic Over Afe Babalola's scandal, Contacts Amnesty International To Check What To Do

The London College is also monitoring the growing condemnation from Nigerians against Babalola, which bothers on the legal luminary's defamation suit against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

The King's College London in the United Kingdom is presently worried over its Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education, named after legal luminary, Afe Babalola, as Nigerians are mounting pressure on the institution and reporting Babalola for alleged abuse of powers.

The London College is also monitoring the growing condemnation from Nigerians against Babalola, which bothers on the legal luminary's defamation suit against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

SaharaReporters learnt on Wednesday that there is pressure on the reputable UK College to drop the naming of the centre after Afe Babalola over his alleged use of the Nigerian police to harass Farotimi and to ensure he is currently in remand.

Established in 2023, the Afe Babalola Centre enables King's College London and its network of partners to provide young Africans with access to education and opportunities which they would otherwise not have.

The centre noted on its website that its vision is based on the power of education to empower and enable Africa’s talented young people to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.

The centre said it is funded by Afe Babalola, and it is supporting Africa’s best minds to become local, national and global leaders.

Top sources in the know of the matter told SaharaReporters that the King's College London has reached out to the Amnesty International, a global human rights organisation, for advisory on what to do.

"Afe Babalola gave them 10 million pounds to set up the center. So, the King's College was responding to public pressure from Nigerians all over the world to cancel the Afe Babalola’s Center for Transnational Education, following his role in arresting Dele Farotimi," one of the top sources revealed.

"So there is panic at the King's College London over Afe Babalola's scandal with Farotimi. The College has contacted the Amnesty International to check for what to do," the source revealed further.

SaharaReporters had on Wednesday reported that the Amnesty International demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Farotimi, detained by the Nigeria Police Force in Ekiti State.

Amnesty International had said that in the Nigerian police custody, there is little hope of fair treatment and no transparency, adding that the police interrogation centers across the country are also notorious locations of possible violations.

The global human rights organisation had warned that the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government must end the escalation of clampdown on dissenting voices in the country and allow everyone in the country to freely exercise their fundamental rights as guaranteed by Nigeria’s constitution and international law.

In a short statement issued on its social media account, Amnesty International said, “Dele Farotimi must be immediately and unconditionally released. In custody of Nigeria Police, there is little hope of fair treatment and no transparency.

“Police Interrogation centers are also notorious locations of possible violations.

“President Bola Tinubu’s government must end this escalating clampdown on dissenting voices and allow everyone in the country to freely exercise their human rights as guaranteed by Nigeria’s constitution and international law.”

SaharaReporters also reported that the Ekiti State Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti denied bail to Farotimi, who is facing allegations of cybercrime.

Farotimi was arrested following a petition by a legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).

The charge suit no: MAD/1,476.C/2024, pits the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police as the complainant against Farotimi as the defendant.

Where is the panic. Chief Afe has built name for himself. This man is over 90years and one must think twice before spoiling that name because these type of people will not take it likely because they don't have much years left to rebuild the name you want to spoil. Some people believe they can be great and notorious when they fall great people. People like this believe maximum is to carry them go to court. They don't care breaking laws so far it won't be more than court cases. People that don't fear court while committing an offence should not be pitied when dealing with by all means

Our politician will say go to Court after committing electoral fraud. Nowadays, bloggers like VDM will say go to Court after cyberbulling and defamation. This man should prove his allegations

Coincidentally, the two most popular lagal luminaries of Ekiti origin is now the Target of blackmail

Fake news from Saharareporters.

Sowore already resorted to the usual blackmail. He will keep on writing rubbish upon rubbish and just today he is calling for a protest.

Anything that will cause chaos, Sowore will be there.

This Farotimi guy should be shipped from prison to Yabaleft immediately!

It's unfortunate that madness is prevalent amongst his brethren, about 90% of them are being affected, but sadly his own is too obvious. He should be shipped to yabaleft immediately as you suggested, but not just him, a whole lot of his brethren too needs help.

Average Nigerians don't read, they prefer someone to give them gist. How could they have fallen into his hands? You've made the book popular and the accusation grow.

I have heard Dele talk about this before the elections but it was never popular. I think when he went to Channels, he repeated it 2 months ago when Laolu Akande interviewed him. He had said he didn't want to talk about it because it was in his book but Laolu pressed further, making him recall the story for posterity.

If you watch this video from 26:25, Laolu introduces this allegation, that he read it in the book and wanted Dele to speak about it. It is even bigger than AB. Our corrupt elite won't want to be casted by this story

You need to read up on Afe Babalola, whose net worth is estimated to be $350 million.

I charged $30m for helping gov’t recover $300m – Afe Babalola

January 25, 2024

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Aare Afe Babalola, has revealed how he charged the sum of $30 million for helping the government recover $300m from banks.

Babalola made this revelation in an interview with a radio talk show host, Ifedayo Olarinde aka Daddy Freeze.

So, a Nigerian truly made 10m pounds from Nigeria and decided to donate it (in the nme of philanthropy) to a school abroad to improve their educational system and reduce tuiton costs for the oyinbo children while the same philantropist charges an arm and a limb for local students to attend the school the Nigerian philanthropist established, in the country where the philanthropist made the money from?

Hhmmm!! Slavery...slavery...slavery....

...and a lot of africans still believe the Europeans actualy came to capture africans as slaves....not knowing the reverse was the case.

This will destroy his name

The day he dies when he should be celebrated

People will loud this thing in a disgraceful way to shame his family

The problem with criminal libel law is it is only for the rich and powerful

Did the police travel from Ekiti to Lagos to arrest Farotinmi at taxpayer expense or did Babalola buy petrol

If a person in the trenches libels their neighbour will the police take similar action.

This is an oppressive abuse of power,Nigerians deserve it.
When Kemi Olunloyo was a victim they cheered

Even under the military they did not use this law

This business of taking people from one state to another is a slippery slope. What is the cost to the police and how is that a priority

When they that taking Christians to Zamfara for misyarniing people will wake up

Not in his defence, he has ABU - Afe Babalola University.

Just saying. I know a former militant who set his own in a neighbouring country.

A former first lady did the same.

Our former presidents and vice have done something in Nigeria.

What does it say about our elites? They believe in creating their own than to build on the existing structure. If people had put in so much to public universities and setup trusts funds, invested in our education, we will be in a different discussion board right now. We have a portable generator mindset and our elites are not different. Nigerians don't like to solve problems as a collective, we'd rather solve our own problems individually and create an ecosystem within the ecosysttem

Publishing a book on the Nigetian Judiciary and making grave allegations against the Legal luminary is a serious case.
Dele Farotimi has been charged to court and reminded in Prison, from where the case would continue.

Dele Farotimi is bigger than the old, corrupt bully Afe Baboonlola. The latter has bitten more than he can chew by exploiting/abusing the criminal justice system, thus lending credence to the true allegations levelled against him by Farotomi.
