You are right. No outsider would pity the man and withdraw just 50k instead of wiping out all the money in the account. I'm suspecting the wife.

Na waa for u o ... you're still here asking?

First thing you shoulda do is to move the rest of the money to another account that's more secure or else, this same person will likely withdraw the rest of the funds in minutes unless u block that atm card via the app.

033 means UBA. However, that's not the best way to go about it. What you should do is this.

Lodge a complaint at your father's bank branch claiming that the transaction was unauthorized. Before you do, note that card present transactions are not eligible for Unauthorized complaints because the card was used physically at the merchant's location. The essence of you raising the dispute is so that an evidence (the merchant copy of the approved receipt) will be given to you as proof.

The receipt should have the location of the merchant store which will give you insight on where the card was used. You can go to the store and lodge a complaint so they can confirm what the person paid for. If the store have CCTV, then you are lucky. You can watch and see your relative cruising with the card.

The whole essence of your lodging a complaint is not to get your money back. Cuz it's gone like the gunners. The goal is for you to be lucky enough to see who stole and used the card.

Lastly, you should have cut the account balance part. Cuz if the thief de Nairaland, you don let am know say 900k plus still de available at im disposal to withdraw.
Ok thank you for this boss...but abeg what do you mean 033 means uba..the old man banks with uba though

The thief fit know say that money dey their ...its probably a kid that doesn't have the mind to withdraw more...

OGA, BLOCK THE ACCOUNT VIA HIS ALERT SIM CARD.
THEN GO WITH HIM TO THE BANK AND FILL A FORM TO OPEN THE ACCOUNT BACK WITH NEW ATM CARD ALSO.

EXACTLY WHAT I DID AT MY OWN TIME.

SEARCH GOOGLE TO GET YOUR BANK DEACTIVATION CODE.

Better block the account to preserve the remaining. There is still much left.

033 is UBA identity
When programming.
It is use as a reference or as a routing identifier to mean
United Bank for Africa .

Just D way an ip address of 177.146.11.9 will point to a domain www.Nairaland.com
The user see the name but the programmer see the coded number .
All bank have a unique identifier.
Shalom

Don't be offended oooo.Does daddy have a side chick especially a Nigerian brand? You know these men can be so loose in the comfort of these small girls.

I am super sure that it's someone within your household except there is a yahoo boy as your next door neighbour who discusses deep premiership matters with your dad.

First things first, have you blocked the card?

I am afraid, it may not be possible to retrieve the lost funds. As papa's son, please advise and support papa in opening another account. A lien should be placed on this new account. Thus no ATM, USSD or Internet transaction can be carried out on it, unless over the counter. Funds can be transferred to the account but cannot be removed. Let papa move all his funds to this account. Looks like papa is a pensioner. If so, when his monthly stipends come, he should move a certain amount to this frozen account and leave only what he would use for the month.

May God save us from these criminals.

See eh, It's someone close to him that did it.
Most probably a family member, Someone that knows his pin.
I doubt. These criminals are becoming more cunning by the day. My aunty suffered same fate last Saturday. It was the debut alerts that made her realise that her card was missing. Note that she was alone and only alighted from her car to get fruits.

Honestly it's difficult to track funds done via POS points.. you can't hold the POS agent for the debit, they simply did a business transaction. Except in a case of a kidnapping ransom payment report via a POS where a POS agent can be held liable for doing a large single transaction which they have been warned to always report or know the transacting parties.

You could still make a report to your bank, they would be able to give you the location of the POS. Get the police involved too, but be ready to part with some money at least to get to the root of the matter.
He is not trying to hold the POS Operator Liable, he is trying to find out who took advantage of his Dad.
If the person can do this successfully, only God knows what he will plan NEXT, maybe to kidnap the Old man.
This is why it is necessary to expend all effort, to expose any criminality and punish the offender,... to send a message to other copy-cats.

Again, you are giving ammunition to what Dele Farotimi wrote in his book, that our Judicial (including Police and Politicians) System is very Corrupt and we Nigerians are just Pretending we have a Democracy!
How can you say he needs to "Part with some Money, to make the Police do the job they are paid to do"?
The Police is our Friend, the Police and our Judges are not corrupt or did you not see the way they reacted to an accusation of Corruption by Dele Farotimi, carting him all the way to Ekiti State, the way Americans Rendition Terrorists to Guantanamo Bay?
Please, have Trust in our Police.
(No be me write all the above, na my Evil Spirit side grin )

Anyway, Once he identifies the POS Operator that gives such Receipt, he should Write a Formal Complaint to the Bank and Copy the EFCC and the Police.
I think he should also copy the CBN (cant remember the handle they use, right now).
He should also keep it alive on the Social Media, by tagging a copy tot he Police PRO on "X" (Tweeter).
He should also follow-up and keep the Social Media Public abreast of the situation, this is the part that put our Public Officers on their toes, to do their Job.

The Thief will be identified and then Answers will come up.
He needs to know who the Thief is, how the Thief executed this successfully and it could also benefit the Members of the Public whose Parents are in a similar situation.

Go to the bank that issued your dad's ATM, you can request for all the details.

Every pos has a linked bank account number, bank name, bank account owner, physical address, telephone number, the complete kyc. You can request fir all these information, and then do yiur own research

Nigerian bank apps are supposed to have features that should enable people block or freeze their cards or accounts even during weekends.

This is not rocket science na.
Most bank apps have features that allow the account holder to deactivate their ATM card anytime they wish

And the person only withdrew 50k leaving almost a million naira intact.
The person is someone who loves the old man but needs money urgently and knows Baba wont give him or her if he/she asks.
It is a loving member of the family. grin
Gbam!. That's just it. The average scammer would have wiped everything in that account.

It's most likely one of them got a hold of the card. If you can, ask the POS operators in your area if any of them came to use POS on the day in the alert.

I don't use either but this is good to know. Despite all the upgrades the Nigerian banks were involved in recently, we would have expected this feature to be a basic requirement since we have had so many reports of scams.

Your dad is an elderly person no need to be using debit card on his account. All withdrawals must be done in the bank at his consent.
It seems one of his children requested for the card in the first place to have full access of his bank transactions
Re: Someone Stole My Dads ATM Card And Withdrew Money by Testimony1988(m): 3:35pm On Dec 09, 2024
Go to his bank so they can trace the person that withdrew the money, meanwhile you need to block the card with immediate effect.

These days they don't need to know the pin of ur debit card before carrying out fraudulent transactions sofar they get the number at the front of the card and the 3digits at the back of the card they are good to go.. Beside that might not be a pos transaction it may be an online transaction
