The Senate caucus joined called for wider consultations before the passage of the bill, insisting that there are needs for constituents, stakeholders to be consulted.


The South-East Caucus in the Nigerian Senate has failed to endorse the controversial tax bill of President Bola Tinubu which is currently before the National Assembly.

The Senate caucus joined called for wider consultations before the passage of the bill, insisting that there are needs for constituents, stakeholders to be consulted.

The senators revealed their stance on Monday following a closed-door meeting of senators from the five South-East states, held in the office of their leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South).

Abaribe who spoke on behalf of the caucus stated that the caucus does not oppose the proposed tax reforms.

It was stated that the caucus, however, believed that more extensive engagement with stakeholders was necessary.

He noted that this would be important before the bills are fully considered by both chambers.


He said, “As senators from the South-East, we are not against the Tax Reform Bills. However, we insist on wider consultations with our constituents across the 15 senatorial districts, state governments, and other critical stakeholders in our zone.”


“We have reviewed the bills and feel it is essential to share our insights with stakeholders in the South-East to ensure the final framework reflects equity and addresses regional concerns. Consultation is vital for inclusiveness and effective legislation.”

Abaribe stated that the Senators would need to consult their constituents across the fifteen senatorial districts in the zone.

“Specifically, we need to consult with our constituents across the 15 senatorial districts in the zone, with our state governments, and with other critical stakeholders,” he added.

SE senate caucus did not reject the bill, they only called for more wider consultation. They seems to be sitting on the fence and not bold like the South-South caucus.

But let’s give them time. In few weeks, they will release their final verdict.

Wasn’t it just one year ago that Nigerians were tricked with sweet-sounding electoral reforms that claimed to require electronic transmission of votes? We know what happened afterwards.

Where were they all along? The bill went through the first and second reading at the speed of light and these ones were there nodding their heads like some desert iguanas. The northerners have been shouting, while all these south east senators were busy dancing skelewu because one Simon Ekpa was arrested. None of them is serious. No foresight. They get dribbled everyday. Tinubu already fooled them. One meeting with Orji Kalu and he will tell the world that the SE is okay witht the bill.. If not for Ndume, this bill would have been signed into law by now and yet a whole South East caucus haven't made clear their position on it.

They have not even proven that this VAT reform will benefit the SE. 3 of the top 10 lowest VAT generating states are from the SE, and 2 of them are oil/gas producing states (full list below).

They have not provided data to show that these states will generate more VAT and earn more VAT share than they’re currently getting now. Abia state generated N663 million VAT in August 2024 but got N5 billion VAT after revenue share, show me data that proves that if companies in Abia had paid their VAT to Abia and not their headquarters in Lagos, Abia would’ve generated X amount of VAT and more than N5 billion after revenue share

So you share most of oil/gas money to non-oil producing states, but when the states earn VAT, you want them to keep most of it?

They must put 2% clearance of good in the next 5 years to encourage importers to make use of this seaport

Super highway and railway must be built to connect this seaport to Northern, southwest, East South South..
Headquartered of agencies and multinationals must be spread across each geopolitical zones...

Revenue from oil must be paid the state government and not directly to Lagos.

How many of their Governors do wider consultation before enacting laws?
All stakeholders were carried along before drafting the bill Tax Bill. I agree there are grey areas in the bill that need to be sorted but as per consultation,it was widely done.
