Tax Reforms Will Reinvigorate Northern Economy – Northern Experts by TimeManager(op): 1:56pm On Dec 10, 2024
A group of experts from Northern Nigeria have thrown their weight behind the Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu, saying they will reinvigorate the northern economy.

The experts, who spoke as resource persons in a town hall meeting in Abuja organised by 200 civil society organisations, refuted claims that the bills are anti-north and are rather geared towards the development of the region.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Mustapha Abubakar, a chartered accountant said the Tax Reform Bills are designed to expand Nigeria’s tax base, improve compliance and establish sustainable revenue streams.

“The bills are expected to have a positive impact on the northern economy, potentially increase government revenue, reduce poverty, and promote economic growth and development,” Abubakar said.

“One of the key benefits of the bills is the potential to increase revenue generation for state and local governments in the north. The proposed reduction of VAT distribution to the federal government from 15% to 10% and the increase in the share of state governments from 50% to 55% will result in more funds being available for development projects in the north.

“This is expected to lead to improved infrastructure, education, and healthcare in the region. Another significant benefit of the tax reform bills to the north is the potential to promote economic growth and development.

“The proposed reduction of company income tax from 30% to 25% over two stages will make it easier for businesses to operate in the north, leading to increased investment and job creation.”

Barrister Maxwell Batusan of the Kano state Internal revenue service another expert at the meeting, noted that the bills will promote synergy between the federal, state and local governments.

“The Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill intends to establish the Joint Revenue Board, which will streamline tax administration and promote fairness and equity in the distribution of revenue,” Batusan said.

“Additionally, the exemption of small businesses with annual turnovers of N50 million or less from paying income tax will provide a boost to entrepreneurship and innovation in the region.

“Overall, the tax reform bills have the potential to unlock the economic potential of the north and promote sustainable development in the region.”

The event was chaired by Prof Malfouz Adedimeji, Vice Chancellor African School of Economics ( Pan-African University of Excellence Abuja).
The town hall meeting was organised by the Coalition of Northern Civil Society Groups in collaboration with Concerned Northern Professionals.

Re: Tax Reforms Will Reinvigorate Northern Economy – Northern Experts by HydraFeeds(m):
Finally ,some sane minds from the northern blocs .

Osun State is generating more money than the amount remitted or declared especially from gold mining that's destroyed a lot of farms and streams .

With this tax reforms ,such state could modify their taxes, openly declared remitted tax since most now belongs to them and they will look for opportunities to grow the state economy so as to generate more money .

The same applies to northern states that are blessed with gold and other minerals .

The purported population is also a blessing.

Lastly ,people that try to ridicule states like Lagos by calling them agbero despite having worse in their states will now know the importance of agbero .

This is exactly the way the North will throw their weight behind Tinubu in 2027. There is no doubt about it, before 2027, a lot of things would have fully stabilize.

Actually, Tinubu has started pressing buttons.

If this bill pass, be rest assured Tinubu will win second term, if he can get them to agree to this, his influence must have been understated.

Tinubu is deceiving them. By the time they see the handwriting of Tinubu on the wall, it will be too late for them. Tell me one policy or reform that Tinubu introduced that's working. They don't know anything. They will cry bitterly when the tax reform bill sail through. Tinubu that has no empathy.

Does this remind anyone of the fake bishops T-Pain hired to validate his Mu-Mu ticket last year huh

GreatAxeMan:
One of the fake bishops apparently hired by Bola Tinubu’s campaign for the public presentation of Kashim Shettima as the vice presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has narrated how he was paid for the appearance.

The imposter, who identified himself to Peoples Gazette as Joseph Odaudu, said Mr Tinubu’s hirelings broke a mutual agreement to be paid N100,000 for the shady job.

“They came to meet us at the car park behind Eagle Square and they promised to give me N100,000. They bought food for us and took us to another place where they gave us clothes to dress like Christian leaders and reverend fathers,” Mr Odaudu told The Gazette shortly after the event in Abuja on Wednesday. “But after we finished they only gave me N40,000 and another person said they got only N30,000. I don’t know why they changed our agreement because they said they had N100,000 for us.

“I am a Christian and I am supporting Tinubu but I hate when people lie and fail to deliver on their promises,” he added.

A spokesman for Mr Tinubu’s campaign did not immediately return a request seeking comment.

The fake bishops had appeared in a cassock to give Christian voters a false impression that Mr Tinubu’s decision to pick a Muslim northerner as his running-mate for the 2023 general election meant well for the country despite strong criticism from the Christian community and opinion leaders in the country.

The Catholic Church had described those who appeared at the event held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja as “impostors,” telling The Gazette the church had no representation at the event.

When asked if he knew that it was illegal to disguise as a Catholic bishop, Mr Odaudu insisted he didn’t break any laws.

“No law was broken we only tried to show Nigerians that Christians are solidly behind Asiwaju Tinubu,” he added.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had kicked against the choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket and registered its opposition against the ruling decision of the ruling All Progressives Congress for the 2023 election.

Also, Christian leaders in the APC had repeatedly warned that the same religion ticket would spell doom for the party, following reactions and heavy criticism from Nigerians.

Good… now all those illegal mining going on in the north would be captured in the tax net.

Either you tax em, or starve the indigenes whilst collecting bribes from the illegal miners.

Loot the tax proceeds and face scrutiny from your indigenes.

Meanwhile, Alphabeta boys are extremely pleased.

It’s not as if Ndume does not know the real truth, but he’s just being political.
Just as it was not as if Fayemi and APC did not know the real truth about fuel deregulation in 2012, but they were just being political 12 years ago, with no care in the world about our wellbeing.

Omooba77:
A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday, said the protest that trailed the fuel subsidy removal during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 was due to political interests.

Fayemi said this in his keynote address delivered at a national dialogue organised to celebrate the 60th birthday celebration of the founding National Secretary of Alliance for Democracy and Fellow, Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Professor Udenta Udenta in Abuja.

The programme was attended by Jonathan, former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili; former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, among others.

The PUNCH reports that on January 1, 2012, President Goodluck announced the removal of fuel subsidy and adjusted the pump price of petrol from N65 per litre to N141.

The decision sparked mass protests, tagged ‘Occupy Nigeria’ across major cities of the country.

The price was later re-adjusted to N97, after more than a week of protests.

Petrol price was later reduced to N87 in 2015.

Jonathan faced serious backlash for the fuel price adjustment, especially from leaders of the All Progressives Congress, who were then in different opposition parties, including the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressives Congress, All Nigeria Peoples Party, and All Progressive Grand Alliance.

Is that why oil is owned by the people on the land, in the same way that farmers and ranchers own their agricultural land?
