Abia State Proposes ₦‎750.3 Billion Budget For 2025 by Metrix147(op): 2:54pm On Dec 10, 2024
Governor Alex C. Otti of Abia State has presented the 2025 budget proposal to the Abia State House of Assembly, with an ambitious plan to continue the developmental momentum initiated during his administration's first 18 months.

Speaking on December 10, 2024, in Umuahia, the Governor proposed a budget of ₦750.3 billion, a 30% increase from the 2024 fiscal year.

The 2025 budget allocates 82% of the total outlay (₦611.7 billion) to capital projects, reflecting the administration's commitment to socioeconomic transformation. Major allocations include:

₦55 billion for road construction and rehabilitation, including rural roads to boost agricultural productivity.
₦4 billion for the revamping of the Umuahia Regional Water Scheme.
₦29.5 billion for perimeter fencing in 262 schools to enhance safety.

₦13 billion for agro-industrial processing zones in Bende, Ukwa, and Umunneochi local government areas.
Governor Otti highlighted the ongoing transformation of key urban centers, including Aba and Umuahia, citing completed and ongoing road projects as evidence of progress.

A combined 35% of the budget will be allocated to health and education, with specific projects including:

Rehabilitation of 200 primary healthcare facilities across the state.
Construction of new sites for tertiary institutions, including the Abia State College of Health Science and Management Technology.
Investment in libraries and reading rooms in all 184 wards to revive the reading culture.

Governor Otti revealed that Abia has become one of Nigeria’s top three destinations for foreign investment, following Lagos and Abuja. A notable highlight is a $120 million agro-investment agreement aimed at palm produce processing, which is projected to create 11,000 jobs.

That is around 505 million dollars.

And the funny thing is most states have that tiny amount of money as 'budget'

Yet people would be wanting what an economy with a budget of 500 Billion dollars has.

Nigerians are not ready to change Nigeria. grin

Yes, Nigeria is BROKE. Corruption makes the brokeness WORSE. Realizing Nigeria is a broke nation is the first step on the road to change. Second step is to realize that oyel cannot feed even Bayelsa state. cheesy

Lol

Where would that come from?

The annual budget of a state owing salaries cannot exceed N150b😀

Even the white powder business of the whole 5-plot Republic won't be enough for this.

People who believed Buhari was cloned will believe this because them and sense 🫲🏻.........🫱🏻

750 billion for a population of approximately 4.2 million people amounts to about N182k or $116 per head, if the money were to be shared.
$116 can't feed a 6-month-old child for one year. The budget is very poor.

In context. The US budget for 2023 was $6.7 trillion on a populationof 334 million. Each person gets at least $20k or or #34 million if it were to be shared.
That's what a budget looks like

It is good to invest in library, build airports, flyovers and all this. But, our government should know that, in Nigeria, there are more pressing needs than these.

For example, a social worker recently reported his experience of how more Nigerians are dying of hunger and hunger-related issues than the media is covering. I'm saying this here because Nigerians should join his call on the Nigerian government to declare an emergency on food security in the country.

I think this is the right time to do this so that the federal, state and local governments can include the idea of soup kitchens recommended by the report in their budgets. See the report here

That is the best the governor can afford on such low budgets.

The thing is, most of your states are BROKE. They cannot muster the kind of budgets that would guarantee high quality roads, nor dare charge the people of the state the kind of taxes that would keep those roads in good repair.

Yes, Abia state and Your state, and every state in Nigeria.

Even Lagos, their budget is not enough to give the city a decent sewage and drainage system.

And merging the states would only make matters worse.

All your states cannot show anything for the budget, because those budgets are SCANTY.

Your state in Nigeria needs something like a budget of 10-20 trillion naira at least before we can talk. Your state and Abia state.

One state even had 121 million naira for education last year. State with state university and three poly as well as uncountable secondary and primary schools.

Nigeria is BROKE. and the corruption makes it worse.

Railway that took about 15 years to build 2 out of 7 lines?

Railway that was built with second hand rail coaches.

Railway that was built in the state with a large income from all the things located there?

Has any other state in the SW or even the rest of the country built railway? NO.

Kano tried. Ganduje was governor then, he even got a proposal , and the state assembly...filled with his yes men...said NO to rail in kano, because the state cannot afford it.

You guys better stop boasting. LAGOS is broke. It needs 50 times the money it makes to look like a proper world city. Not the shanty town it is.

All these clowns trying to compare the budget to states in USA.

Is it today that you clowns know that Nigeria is a poor country?

Or you want state government to make people pay tax on money that doesn't exist?

Living standard in USA and Nigeria is different. A plate of food in Nigeria is cheaper than in USA for a reason. So a state in Nigeria doesn't need an equivalent of state budget in USA.

I have told so many persons that it's because of the corruption of our politicians that make majority of Nigerians think Nigeria is a wealthy nation. Its even recently i discovered our national budget has never exceeded $43b since 1999.Nigeria needs a minimum of $500b budget annual for any meaningful developments to happen in this country. We have never done 10% of $500b and yet people believe the country is wealthy.

Nigeria is a very poor country that both the leaders and citizens have failed to acknowledge this fact.

Best governor for now in Nigeria.

The governor of Abia state is truly making impact with his impressive performance, and it's clear that the state made an excellent choice. His leadership style, which seems to be inspired by Peter Obi's ideology, is bringing about significant positive change to the state. But again , I don't like the amount he's putting on this budget, because other thieves are doing, doesn't mean he has to do it too. I know he meant well and want to utilize the money for the benefits of all Abians, but still sir, I am not impressed with this.
Alex Otti is more ambitious in mega project delivery than Peter Obi who was more conservative in saving money than spending.
Both are good in their own ways.

This is not an issue of compliment the state doesn't have huge financial resources. Most governors present unrealistic budget proposals.Abia state can't get more than #10b from FAAC and I am not aware they have an igr of #60b annually.
