While I admit that accidents happen every where in the world, a case of poor firearm handling can be seen through this report. How can you be wading off bandits and shot someone on your side? Poor gun handling is evident here imo. But this is NG where we always associate inefficiency/incompetency to fate and devil's work anyways.

For close quarter protection a carbine would be better .. you need space to properly use an AK 47 , trying to return fire with it from a moving vehicle can be very very clumsy and if the operator is tensed and panicky this kinds of accidents can occur

The AK is not designed for use in close protection scenarios.

There is a reason it's called a battle rifle.

Ideal rifles for close protection are carbines like the Tavor (x95 varient and P90.

For familiarity purposes the Governor should order the AK 105 for the Government House Police Unit

Why is accidental discharge common with Nigerian police?
We hardly record any accidental discharge from the Nigerian military, only police, it tells only one thing.
Nigerian police personnel don't care , it's not lack of training, they panic a lot when they hear assailant gunshot.
Too much bribe is all they care about.

Anyway, no sentient, the officer should be treated as a suspect, exactly how the police would have treated the matter if the officer was a civilian.
Even when the Nigerian police knows you are innocent, they will lock you up, and start extorting money from you.
If the deceased was not the governor's sister, the Nigerian police would Aldo have extorted the family heavily, when they want to carry the corpse.

2. Low recoil equals good accuracy
3. Penetration power maybe lower than assault rifle but accuracy is always superior in CQC

Assault rifles is only used for a more serious situation and not just any assault rifles. Rifles with high accuracy and low recoil. Like M16, M1 cabine, FN FAL
AK 47 wasn't designed for such. It's a war rifle with high collateral damage in hostage rescue.
In war collateral damage is not the priority and who put more suppressive fire is the top priority.

Am sure the officer put the AK on suppressive fire mode and not a single shot mode that may increase accuracy.

Your comment sounds true but completely wrong.

While I am of the opinion that the average officer should be handed pistols in this scenario it is clearly a case of incompetence, negligence or mistake.

Remember the officer is an escort that means he is on the same side with the deceased meaning he is not completely aiming for a precision shot as it is not an hostage situation. Shoot anywhere in the direction of the assailant and that's more than good enough.

The problem here is, he seems to have forgotten that his VIPs must always be behind him or must stay out of line of fire - that's incompetence and negligence.

You can also look at it from this perspective, the deceased in panic may have strayed into his line of fire. Overall in this case the type of weapon is not the issue but the personnel handling it.

Let me ask first, how do you combat multiple assailant with automatic weapons with just pistols?
