You're posting how much you got to tell everyone the money is small? That an "injustice" was done to you? When you were granted admission, was it with a signed agreement that you will be given a reward for graduating? Nigerians should do away with this silly entitlement mentality. Education is to equip you with the skills to contribute to society. For us here, it is the needless acquisition of paper certificates for the sole purpose of bragging. That is why there are certificates everywhere, but little skill.
Even when you mention skill, someone will start talking of "certification" for the skill. And will pursue getting that instead of the actual skill.
if people with big bumbum they didnt labour for get rewarded with a hundred million in reality shows, why should someone who laboured for his knowledge be given N5,000? Is that pen and keyholder money or what?

He wasn't the one that prevented you from getting a first class, so quit being jealous of him!

All over the world, academic excellence is still recognized and rewarded handsomely! There's nothing you can apply whatever skill you talk about to without first being discovered via intellectual works. That is why serious and progressive nations have continually rewarded academic excellence.

Only a nation like Nigeria that is led by dunces and agberos (like Oshomole) do not prioritize academic excellence but would rather enthrone mediocrity everywhere!

Our sound minds in this country have been frustrated and left to wonder about without being given the opportunity to unleash their potentials. That is why it appears like academic excellence is not beneficial to the nation. Give these intellectuals a place to stand and watch them move not just Nigeria forward but the world as a whole.

For the imps quoting me. I don't give two effs about your rants. Education is not a sport.
Calm down and read first, alumni awarded him 1m but the department gave him 5k out of the 1m. Does it sound okay for people to award you 1m in public and give you 5k in private. The public deserves to know the truth

While we congratulate the young lad on this feat, am not sure he's aware of the ramifications of his actions.

Unless it is clearly stated in the rules, the school does not owe him any monetary award. It is simply at thier discretion, but apparently some are taking it as a right. It is NOT.

So, alumni gave the money to the department to give to the person? That is not true Oga. The graduate is an alumnus himself, so alumni will give him their award directly themselves. The department gave him their own separate award. And that amount is the amount the dept has been giving for a long time, it has not been revised, so now, its almost just ceremonial. That notwithstanding, the young man should not feel entitled

Nothing wrong in posting the amount on social media. He made the post probably to further buttress how intellectualism is no longer rewarded in the country. He didn't make the post to attract sympathy but to lend his voice in advocating for better rewards for intellectualism just like many of us have been doing. He probably didn't expect the post to gain attention like it did to the point of him getting the 1M naira reward.

Not to devalue the achievement, but best students in Nigeria do not often improve the society. This is because Nigeria's education still value Regurgitation of Received Information. Best students in Nigeria are the least creative pupils who give back exactly the knowledge they received. Oftentimes, Best Students go on to become teachers. And the circle will repeat itself. When I graduated from Uniben several decades ago, the creative ones were the mavericks. They are now the successful and enterprising ones. And best student then are lecturers and civil servants now.

If so, it’s better to give him nothing than insult a man with 5k…blatant insult to think 4years of hardwork equals 5k… it would be better to give him nothing than insult him with peanuts. What is the money meant for? A compensation package? Or a reward for excellence? Think about it, if you know the effort it takes to have that kinda CGPA alone, you would be completely disgusted
Re: UNIBEN Best Graduating Student Gifted ₦1 Million By Prof. Chris Imumolen by wonder233: 5:38am On Dec 13, 2024
What do you mean by "4years of hardwork equals 5k"? The reward for his academics is in how he applies the knowledge acquired for the good of society and earn a living doing so. The University is not the one to reward him, even if Dangote gives him 1billion, it is still just a symbolic gesture just like the University's 5k.
We really need to do away with this entitlement mentality especially when it comes to academics.

That is a stupid gesture, they should have just left him alone, that is pure mockery, An entitled person would not say stuff like “better to leave him with nothing than give him 5k“…they should have given him a souvenir if they knew they were broke, a symbolic gesture huh? Lol 5k is now a symbolic gesture? Listen to yourself, 5k is now the symbol for excellence, for someone who made the best performance for a training of 4 years, the symbol of your best placeholder is 5k…this is just an insult, a reflection of a defective educational system, it’s so evident the lecturers in that system don’t want you to progress, so an entire department joined heads together and could only come up with a 5k reward? They couldn’t think about getting a book with that budget, getting something else but were so mentally lazy and non chalant, students being trained by failures, they’re all failures, a whole department could only come up with 5k, it says everything about their mindset, if this is how they favor their best then guess the opinion they have regarding the average student, if they can’t even make a sacrifice for their best student, guess how non chalant they are to the average student…all these ones don’t give a Bleep. Let’s call a spade a spade.
