And mind you in the case of Ghana it is the Vice President not the incumbent President, which still has many examples in the U.S.A.

Al Gore was Bill Clinton's Vice who contested against Bush (the son). Gore lost though the election too was considered a fraud in favor of Bush who wasn't in the incumbent party.
