Okuama Leader, Dennis Okugbaye, Dies In Military Custody by Newlymarried(op): 2:13am On Dec 12, 2024
The 81-year-old treasurer of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Dennis Okugbaye, has died in military detention. This comes barely six days after the community’s President-General, Pa James Oghoroko, also died in military detention. Oghoroko, Okugbaye, alongside other leaders of the community including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Mrs. Mabel Owhemu, and Mr. Dennis Malaka, were arrested by the military between August 18 and 20, 2024.

The arrests followed the March 14 killing of 17 soldiers on a peace mission aimed at resolving a dispute between Okuama and the neighboring Okoloba community.

The military had responded to the soldiers’ deaths with a violent raid on Okuama, reducing the town to ruins and forcing residents to flee to an internally displaced persons camp in Ewu Kingdom, established by the Delta State government.

Pastor Akpos Okugbaye, the son of the late community treasurer, announced his father’s passing on Tuesday, December 10.

The death of Pa Okugbaye has sent shockwaves through the already mourning community, reigniting protests.

Aggrieved Okuama youths and women, on Tuesday, renewed their seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and the military, demanding the release of all detained leaders and the return of Pa Oghoroko’s corpse.

“After the seven days, this river will be blocked. Let the soldiers and Tinubu come and kill us so that we know Okuama is wiped out entirely,” protesters declared on Sunday.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Elder Ohwotake Otiero, condemned the deaths in detention and called for immediate action:

“We want the corpse and those detained to be released immediately. We will take the laws into our hands because we have been pushed to the wall. Why should our P-G be killed through torture?"

The Nigerian soldiers treat Southern Nigeria the way they can never treat the North. It makes one wonder if we have two different constitutions in this country. RIP to Sir Okugbaye. He has paid with his life.

The only difference with Nigerian democracy and military regimes is that there is election every 4years, Nigerian democracy has targeted innocent civilians, while military regimes target corrupt politicians

Imagine a region that produces the Oil that tinubu and his gang of thieves embezzle being treated this way but mandate thief was quick to apologize to his Fulani masters like a slave when Nigerian Air Force jet killed innocent northerners. Only an irredeemable fool believes there is anything like one Nigeria. Nigeria can never be one, will get worse daily and can never progress even in the next 500 years as one. country

When I see things happening in our side most times I shed tears. When two brothers are fighting, the enemy will come in.

We can only see this type of inhumane treatment on the side of oppressed people,it has never happened in the North and will never. There is no place in our constitution where military will detain people to a point they die without consequences, this is happening because my riverine brothers choose to castigate his elder brother Igbo just to satisfy our common enemy.

They know if there is unity between the two brothers, and oppression of such cannot take place.

I'm waiting for the idiotic Tinubu supporters to say something about this.

Elderly men kept in military custody since early this year when this happened. People who have absolutely nothing to do with what happened in Okuama.

Now two of them have died in incarceration because the Nigerian Army continues to act like a a terrorist organization and an occupying force in the Niger Delta.

I blame that incompetent Sheriff Oborevwori for all this.
I don't know why the Niger Delta is cursed with docile governors.

The military has a lot to hide on the whole matter. Else this should be a case for the police to handle.

This is the Southern unity those rascals from that side used to deceive some of my SS kins & kiths.

They thought giving the senate presidency to Akpabio would bring about the fathom Southern unity. They have snatched & grapped what does not belong to them, punishing our elders & letting them die in their emilokan military custody
