We need to have a very serious conversation about Bayelsa State.

2024 budget - N489bn
2025 budget - N689bn

- Produced a Former President of Nigeria and Fed Minister of Petroleum.

- Has a Population of 2.9 million people with 2.6m in extreme poverty.

Where is the money going?

Honestly, it's time folks like you try and make some personal research about what you always try to enquire from the public undecided

I was once like you asking why Bayelsa state always seems lagging behind in terms of infrastructure and development but from some personal findings I have come to realize that actually Bayelsa is performing at the level of most states in Nigeria 🇳🇬 if not slightly better.

You might think the government doesn't have projects ongoing or he is just seated there in the Government House entertaining visitors but alas right from Dickson to Diri this men have things going on, Bayelsa might not be toeing the path of other states by building things like Flyovers and Underpasses (which they don't need now) but they are trying to connect all the riverine communities and islands in the state.

You should study the topography of Bayelsa state, rightly put, Bayelsa is supposed to be the original Delta State of Nigeria because of the numerous inflows of distributries (which flows into the Atlantic Ocean) in the state which made almost the entire state waterlogged and hinders smooth infrastructural construction. That's one of the reasons a budget for one kilometer of road in Bayelsa can be double of the same kilometer in Delta or Osun states and even triple of the same in the north. undecided

Bayelsa is larger than 10 Nigerian States ..

Bayelsa is not easy to develop.
You can hardly see any Ijaw beggar in Bayelsa grow up

And that's a fact...

It's only in Nigeria 🇳🇬 that those that knows nothing about geography will be giving eponyms based on what their spirit leads grin

What’s happening to Bayelsa is the same thing that’s happening to the Niger-Delta/South-South in general: over the decades they have imbibed a culture of gov’t dependency and patronage as well as rent-seeking owing to oyel! The seeds of this culture were sown in the mid to late 60s, a bit after the resource was discovered and commercialised! This culture breeds a lackadaisical and sense-of-entitlement attitude that works at cross-purposes with economies built on initiative, resilience and igba-mbo! States like Delta, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom also face the same problem but it’s not as pronounced or noticeable since they largely have economies that are already built up to some reasonable level! I see a state like Imo fast going down this same route…. they can t take 3 more years of Uzodinma without coming out unscathed!
