Water transportation needs to be heavily regulated just like road, they need to have their own version of VIO and FRSC. All these floating coffins should not be allowed to move on water. Earlier this year, 2 ferries capsized in Lagos within the space of 2 weeks with casualties. The government can't be folding their arms and watch these people transport vulnerable people in such unsafe vehicles. A great percentage of the population can't swim and even if they can, how far can they go in open waters? RIP to the deceased |

dominique:1. There's NIWA officials all waterways in Nigeria, some of their officials are just sitting down drinking kai-kai with the locals without carrying out their core responsibility 2. If the NIWA is not carrying out their core responsibility, how will they stop those floating coffin plying our waterways? Ways to avert further casualty or accident at sea 1. Ensure the boat plying the waterways is seaworthy by ensuring that the boat should go to certified boat repair shop just like dry-dock for vessels go for repairs and maintenance and a certificate is issued before they can float on the waterways. 2. The boat driver should be certified by maritime training institution in Nigeria, they are bunch around that offer safety courses and training on boat handling, a lot of those boat drives are just locals who learnt the trade from their masters or father. 3. Each boat has a carrying capacity (Both cargo and passengers) that's why bigger ships has plimsoll line (boat manufacturer no be mumu) 4. NIWA should ensure all passengers and cargo to be loaded onboard is properly weighed before authorisation 5. All passengers and boat driver should wear life jacket not even Life vest and the life jacket should not be used more than 10 yrs and must be replaced. Recommended lifejacket brand is Laliza Ensure their outboard engine is top shape and the cover must be in place (Lot of them are fond of opening it due to reason best known to them) water splash could shutdown the engine, heavy current or wave can capsize the boat when it's not in motion. In short NIWA get plenty job to do on our waterways, but this is Nigeria where touts are controlling transportation business, hence those NIWA officials are helpless. If the government now decides to contract waterways transportation to private companies with good and safe boats, they will come and cry out to the public. Calabar - Oron route has a private boat transport company with good and safe ferry and lot of people prefer it to the open-type power boats. |
