The Edo State House of Assembly, Tuesday, suspended all the Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the 18 Local Government Councils over allegation of ‘misappropriation of funds’.

The decision to suspend the local council administrators was taken during the plenary, after a heated debate by the various lawmakers representing the local councils.

Meanwhile, the heads of the various legislative arm have been directed to oversee the running of the councils for the next two months.

Why? They need to provide solid evidence to show they truly embezzled, they can't just suspend Local government chairmen that were elected by the people of Edo state. The local government chairman should go to court

This is an act of legislative rascality. The Edo State House of Assembly does not have any constitutional power to suspend or dissolve any local government until the expiration of their tenure. The local government chairmen should challenge the impunity in court. I'm sure, the Assembly will be fined heavily.

Personally,i don't support this move by the house of assembly.The LGA elections is in 2026, and no need suspending or sacking LGA chairmen by the house of assembly.

Unfortunately this has been the modus operandi of the governors, once a new administration starts at the state level they will use the state house of assembly to remove the LGA chairmen.
Even if those affected in Edo head to court, by the time the case will be done with, their tenure will be over.

how will such evidence be provided or obtained if they are still in the seat of position?? They have to step aside in other not to suppress evidence and the investigation

They should just go to Court and reclaim their mandate. This one is not a case. State House of Assembly can't remove a local government chairman just as Senate or house of rep. can't remove a state governor. Local government autonomy means that they are independent. Only councilors can remove a local government chairman. These Edo Assembly members should know better.

Are you aware that the case will get to the supreme court? and no matter how fast the court court process would go, we are looking at 2-3 years.
The case of the Deputy Governor can still be drag to the supreme court if not for the end of Obaseki's tenure.
