Hello All, I have heard so much about LASIK surgery for treating short sightedness but I haven't had the courage to go for it until recently that I started contemplating about it. I eventually made up my mind to stop wearing glasses. The wahala with glasses is just too uncomfortable. Imagine, I can't slay with my dark shades as I wanted. Everyone always look at me as an overly serious person (just kidding though, but I just want to drop the glasses for good). I decided to visit an Eye clinic in VI. After conducting numerous tests, the doctor concluded that my eyes were not suitable for the LASIK surgery due to the limited thickness of the cornea. They recommended Toric IOL , which is the same as cataract surgery to correct my vision and will make me to stop wearing glasses. Lately, I developed cold feet and had to delay payment for the surgery to enable think through it one more time. I have done extensive research about the cataract surgery on the internet to gain more knowledge about what it entails especially from a safety point of view. While, research indicates that it is generally a safe procedure, there's still a 1-2% chance of complications happening which could lead to permanent loss of vision. While this statistics should have given me some comfort, unfortunately it hasn't. I have been hung up on the 1-2% chance of failure. I have a beautiful career and long years before retirement. I have a beautiful nuclear and extended family that I cater for and they cannot afford for anything to happen to me. I'd like to get your opinions and thoughts about going ahead with this surgery. Is it worth taking this life changing move? Has anyone been in the same shoe as mine? Has anyone undergone the same surgery in the past? How did you subdue the fear? Kindly drop your comments, thoughts and experience that will help me make an informed decision. Thank you. |

I'm myopic also, the refractive index of my glasses back in the days was -11. I hated using glasses because of the discomfort and also back then in School, people automatically equated using glasses to being a bookworm so I was always bugged by my classmates in the exam hall. I've been using contact lenses for the past 22 years now and the good thing about contact lenses for myopia is that, unlike glasses which make the vision clearer but objects appear slightly smaller in my experience, with contact lenses the vision is clearer but objects are not smaller. You could opt for contact lenses, that will enable you wear your sunglasses conveniently and still have clear vision. I would also love to do lasik someday, but, to be honest, I would rather do any procedure that involves my eyes in maybe India or other developed countries and not in Nigeria because trust me, if research says there is 1-2 percent chance of things going wrong, the Nigerian factor of negligence and not paying attention to detail will always come into play and increase it to 20-50 percent chance. At the end of the day, I might just continue using contacts for the rest of my life and always just have a pair of glasses for days that I don't want to use contacts. You also have the option of photochromic glasses that gets tinted under UV exposure and comes back to normal when you're indoors. |

determination26:This is awesome. Thanks for your sharing your experience. I might go for the contact lens option. I had thought about it but some friends do complain about red eyes or an irritation of some sort. They also mention how one must always take it off before going to bed. So I kinda thought contact lenses would be as much as uncomfortable as the glasses, but it appears that your experience is quite different. Do you experience some of these issues with contact lenses as well? Your feedback would be appreciated. |

Generally, when dealing with your eyes or any other body part, you need to be careful. The issue of red eyes, I don't necessarily agree with that. I used to smoke marijuana at one point in my life, that was the only time my eyes used to be red, then I always had visine eye drop in my possession but over time my eyes began to react to the eyedrops because visine is actually a steroidal drug and excessive use of steroids is bad in general. I quit smoking years ago and I've not had red eyes ever since and I use contacts everyday. It's advisable to take them off everyday but I've slept with mine three days in a row sometimes and nothing happened though i wouldn't advice that. If you've never used contacts before, the few days might be weird but you will be too excited with the clear vision to really care then as time goes on, you get used to it. Irritations only happen if you do not take precautionary measures like washing your hands thoroughly before putting them in your eyes and removing them from your eyes, proper storage with the storage solution. I don't know if you are a man or a woman but if you are a woman you might want to avoid putting on those fake lashes if you use contacts because I've noticed that it causes irritation for women. I had ulcer of the cornea once though but that was my fault, I kept wearing severely damaged contact lenses for days without taking them off. If contact lenses are bad, you will know and they are cheap and easily replaceable. I get a pair for 8k and they can last me for a year as long as I'm carrful. Some people also complain of dryness of the eyes when using contacts, there are eye drops that take care of that. Nutridelfarms: |
