Sad story, but a bachelor's degree plus professional qualifications like ICAN or ACCA would have made him more marketable than the master's degree he obtained.

He should try and practice what he learnt... Eg, he should open his own club and be the Head of the finance team. Problem solved
succinct! He doesn't have to be employed to practise his discipline, he can own a club and do what he loves

Must he work in a bar? Why can't he go into farming? It doesn't matter ones qualification, farming is a readily available source of income.

One good thing i love about studying Accounting is the fact that you can work anywhere, even if you set up your own business you would be able to balance things up cos everything in life requires accountability. I studied accounting in school as well. I set up a car wash business, i am a boss of myself and i answer 'yes sir' to nobody. Nigerian youths should learn how to think outside the box. No be everybody go wear suit and knot tie!

Regardless of where I'm based, my words are TRUE.

A brilliant, hardworking and ambitious man who is certified as a CHARTERED Accountant would have ZERO problem securing a DECENT job in Nigeria.

The BIG 4 internship route is the EASIEST.

Accounting is a PROFESSIONAL course with a clearly defined path.

These Big 4s are ALWAYS recruiting in THIRD-WORLD countries like Nigeria and India because they are eager to exploit cheap labour.

They outsource jobs from expensive first-world countries to their branch companies in places like Nigeria.

If Emmanuel is smart and ambitious and a CHARTERED accountant but he tends a bar; Emmanuel does NOT exist.

That is the TRUTH.
I was also looking for where Emmanuel did his ICAN or ACCA

We all know a degree in Accounting without a Chartership is useless in the Accounting field

Emmanuel does not exist because if he did, he will know that a degree in Accounting must be followed up with a Chartership
Re: The Sad Reality Of Nigeria Master Degree Holders by Yunus2012(m): 11:53am On Dec 18, 2024
Even his so called friend could only offer him a bar tending job. Not anything in the finance cycle.

That says a lot about him and his friend.

Oblongata:
I really doubt this story!

One of the hottest jobs in that country is Accounting!

Unless your friend didn’t charter.

I was an Accountant for 10 years and I know that field in that sh*t hole…

Patapata he go join audit trainee

Unless na old guy

Usually, the highest pitched timbrels end up making the faintest noise.

Seems you just landed from your space shuttle and found yourself in a remote part of Nigeria. It seems you have been away from Nigeria right from the year dot. You are clearly not in consonance with the social, economical, and physical realities of the country you just found yourself in.

If I may ask you, these big four firms that provide internship routes, where are they located? Four cities, max. And what happens if Emmanuel is not located in any of these four cities? Would you or anyone here provide all he needs to settle and acclimate in any of these four cities he chooses? Nigeria has more than 36 cities and his options are extremely minimal if he lives outside these four cities.

Again, there are a shitty amount of ICAN holders who are barely surviving, so Emmanuel's plight is not a special case. It is not unique at all. Do you have any idea how many ICAN graduates get accredited yearly? DO you know that (it was made a law, not sure about that though) many Accounting undergraduates sit for ICAN vis-a-vis their undergraduate degree program, do you know that? What is so unique about that?

Again, these big four firms you talked about, how many interns are each capable of on-boarding? How much are they capable of paying these interns?

ICAN holders who do not live in any of the cities these big four are located, then what? What becomes of their fate? How do these get by? Selling sachet water and soft drinks in their small provision store? Is it everyone, or every ICAN holder, who has to relocate to Lagos because they have a degree?

Again, it seems laughable that you think there are jobs everywhere for every degree holder. No sir. There are not.

Easily said than done. You think say na so e easy? It's not always like that. What works for you might not work for me. He needs what would suit his dream or career. It could be something he is good at or what he does that people appreciate so much. E.g driving, cooking etc.

Working in the club can even make him build houses and own cars… very possible!

Nothing is unbelievable in Nigeria when it comes to graduates up to the level of phd holders job hunting. . . If you doubt it, go to dangote company and see classes of graduates who take up employments that doesn’t suit their qualifications. I hope sey una know village people exists in the life of many sha!. If them swear sey person no go see work, that person own na play. Even if he or she knows tinubu one on one. E go just dey run errands kawai hoping and praying sey God go remember am

I graduated with a bsc. and didn’t get a job so I vowed never to further. Many people feels that furthering will open more chances. Handwork/skills pays better.

Just end your pride!

Lol, it is not possible to have ICAN and be jobless. The certificate even requires you to have two years experience before they issue the certificate. Where will a jobless person see the experience from?

I hope you know there are jobless people with ICAN certificate

I have seen many.

Student loans are what they are...loans.

No guarantee you get a job.

Imagine completing a PhD in Philosophy for instance.

There are many.
Why will you start PhD when you are not in that field.
Zero experience. What are you studying then?
You got to be working in that field to go for PhD.

And depending on where you live, you will get student loan. The % you pay every month is negligible. And if you are not working, you don't pay back. If you don't earn up to a certain threshold, you also don't pay back.
That is for where I live anyway. I don't know about others.
I will rather pay a student loan back that will impact on me than the latest car in town or mortgage.

Are they no jobless graduates with Ican certification...?

As If Ican automatically guarantees you a job.

In a country where even ph. D holders struggle to get employment.

Dey play!
Demand vs Supply

As someone who has managed HR in a number of blue-chip firms, I would tell you for free that chartered accountants ARE always in demand. If you are chartered, have a 2.1, and are under 26 maximum, you are almost guaranteed to get a decent paying job.

Likewise if you have by a stroke of luck passed 3 papers of the Actuarial certification, or 2 levels of CFA, you have VERY strong prospects of getting a great starting job in insurance and finance.

Even in America, if you have a B.SC in Gender Studies, just prefer to become a Bartender or Barrista cos you aint going nowhere.

Go to all major markets in Nigeria, contrary to what people believe, majority are graduates. Some are masters degree holders.
If they can just humble themselves.

Hmm.
You just don't start PhD abroad if you are not already working in that field.
Only a novice will do that.
Also depending on the country, you can get student loan to help offset the bill.

You chose the WRONG qualification to pass the right message.

If your FICTIONAL Emmanuel was half as smart and ambitious as you painted him to be, then he'd have gotten his ICAN accreditation and find his way into a Big 4 Accounting Firm through their ROBUST Internship programmes.

Next time you want to tell a cock-and-bull story, make it BELIEVABLE!
