Tax Reform Bills Will See Light Of Day – NASS Assures Tinubu by zero8zero(op): 6:13am On Dec 19, 2024
The National Assembly has vowed that the Tax Reform Bills forwarded to it for consideration and passage by President Bola Tinubu in October this year would see the light of day.

The legislative arm of government said rather than killing the well-envisioned bills, it would engage Nigerians having wrong notions about it, to change their minds and get it passed.

The Tax Reform Bills which are the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria, Establishment Bill, 2024; Nigeria Revenue Service, Establishment Bill, 2024; Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024; and Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas gave the assurance on Wednesday in their separate remarks, during the 2025 budget presentation by President Bola Tinubu before the joint session of the National Assembly.

Akpabio in his opening remarks at the budget presentation said: “Your Excellency, we commend you on your groundbreaking tax reform initiative.

“The four tax reform bills—the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024; Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024; Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024; and Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024, represent a monumental shift in our fiscal landscape.

“It is disheartening that those who have not taken the time to understand these bills are the loudest critics.

“I urge all Nigerians, especially those in public office, to engage with these vital reforms thoughtfully. This initiative marks the first comprehensive tax reform since Nigeria’s independence, presenting a transformative opportunity for rejuvenating small and medium enterprises and enhancing the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.

“These reforms will not only improve Nigeria’s revenue profile but also create a more conducive and internationally competitive business environment, transforming our tax system to support sustainable development.

“We will not kill any reform that you have forwarded to us for consideration Mr President but rather engage Nigerians to see the merits in them.”

Also assuring President Tinubu on the Tax Reform Bills, the Speaker, in his closing remarks, said the National Assembly will work with Mr President in giving his reform agenda the required legislative backing.

“NASS is fully committed to supporting the 2025 budget which had just been laid before us today and as well as other ones, forwarded to us for consideration and passage,” Abbas said.

Meanwhile, both chambers of the National Assembly after the budget presentation at the joint session, set machinery in motion to extend the capital component of the 2024 budget to June 30, 2025.

Legislative action in that direction was taken by listing bills for that purpose on their Order Paper, which passed the first and second reading in the Senate on Wednesday.

A member of the NASS said that there are lots of bills that isn't given due attention, that would have changed things about Nigeria.

But those bills are carpeted because it will make many politicians poor.

This bill is from the president himself and if it was a bill proposed by a fellow NASS member, it'd long been trashed.

Congratulations to the president.... You're a bull and you're fearless.

Like him or hate him, PBAT is determined and focused and his tenure will bring about the necessary change Nigeria so needs!

My late dad had always told me that the President that would bring the desired change would be hated because his policies would be harsh...

Nigeria done spoil since! Tinubu just didn’t want to veil it like others!

No man would have been able to destroy a very sound economy in less than a year... no matter how daaft you are, you wouldn't be able to destroy American economy even in years...

Dude did not destroy Nigeria, he just removed the mirage and unveiled reality in order to get to the core problems of Nigeria and solve it!

God bless Tinubu!

God bless Nigeria!!!

No need to assure anyone. Do the needful, investigate thoroughly, enlighten the citizens, and if it’s for the interest of the nation, pass the bill.

But your asslicking and lack of trust by the citizens will just make you all appear to be doing too much.

Struggling people like you that are earning less than 1 million naira per annum won't be paying any tax. Millions of Nigerians struggling to survive on less than 1 million naira per annum are presently paying tax.

I've always said Tinubu isn't interested in looting Nigerian dry, but his plan is to ensure we have a better economy, but unfortunately most policies are dragging us back. I always say that any policies that doesn't favour any politician is the beginning of breakthrough for common man. Just look at those politicians against tax reform because it won't suit them. There is so much going on in this country ehn

This wasn't what he said on the campaign trail.

Now that he has found out that governing is not the same thing as politicking, we are getting basket after basket of excuses.

He has not delivered what he promised. That is all that matters now.

First, there should be an independent non-partisan body in Nigeria that will be dissecting bills like this.

Cos it's increasingly difficult to know what's good or not, when it comes to policies by the Nigerian government.
