His victory in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria's freest and fairest, was a testament to his broad-based support across ethnic and religious lines. Despite the annulment of the election results and his subsequent incarceration, Chief Abiola remained steadfast in his pursuit of democratic ideals until his untimely death on July 7, 1998. His enduring legacy was further recognized when he was posthumously awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) in 2018 by Former President Muhammadu Buhari, and June 12 was declared Nigeria's Democracy Day in his honour.
