Guy,I haven't spoken to my father for 7yrs and only recently started talking to my mother but no be wetin I go begin yarn here. Most times avoiding these so called family members saves one bitter disappointment and heartache.

Something must be wrong somewhere for you to even think of disconnecting from your family. It is very possible to live without family, after all how do orphans cope? There are people who were born as the only child, and have no parents/siblings and started their families alone. Truth is that it is better to be on your own than to keep a family of bad people who don't wish you well. If these family members have turned a new leaf, then forgive them and take them back. But if they have not turned a new leaf, then cutting off from them is not bad at all.

It's difficult to achieve. However, you can set boundaries but not in a bad way. Know the situations where they'll come in; in all, it is in your hands to protect your immediate family. If your wife is sick, inform her family else they'll blame you if anything happened to her and viceversa.

It depends on the kind of relationship that thrives in your family. Keeping in touch with your family doesn't mean they influence your decision in your matrimonial home. A healthy family breeds healthy marriages of their children.

I've always been a bright kid from my childhood. But since I turned 16, I gave into vices, stealing, fighting, alcoholism and different sexual acts.

I wasted my years. I could have learned online skills or even real life skills.

I just started learning digital marketing. How can I make up for all this lost time??

I don't know OP's motive for even thinking this kind of thought, but in life circumstances happen. Sometimes it's not about the money. It could be about the way he was/is being treated, case of betrayal, violence, complicated issues, name them.

What kind of consequences? What is it you are afraid might happen if you choose to distance yourself from your family?

2. You can do it. Just be sure to have solid back up plans in the case of sickness, death, etc. After that, you are well on your way to living a decent life away from your family.
