I like to commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for stepping in to prevent the inhumane punishment of death by hanging for the theft of a fowl and eggs—an offense for which the individual had already spent 14 years in prison. That sentence alone far exceeded the demands of justice, if the crime warranted such consideration in the first place.

This case underscores the harsh inequalities of the Nigerian legal system. If you dare to speak freely, you are treated as a criminal and silenced. If you embezzle billions of public funds, you are celebrated, even when caught and taken to court. Yet, those pursuing honest, legitimate businesses are burdened by oppressive regulations and treated with suspicion, as though success through integrity is a crime.

It is a system that rewards impunity while punishing integrity—a stark indictment of our need for urgent judicial reform and genuine accountability in governance. -PO

How can an individual be issued with a death sentence for stealing fowl and eggs, even after spending 14 years in jail? This is just beyond wickedness and witchery.

Because they used gun when they went to steal it. If you use a gun to steal water, it’s armed robbery according to the law and it could carry death sentence.

I agree the sentence is too too harsh but it is the law. A person with gun can shoot so the law frown at it.

That is exactly why I said if Nigeria follow law, almost 90% of people will be in prison coz there are lot of things we do that is unlawful and we just overlook.

This our legal system get klegooo....death sentence for stealing ordinary fowl and eggs...even 2years imprisonment is harsh but dude spent 14years in jail and was even waiting to be killed....I have seen wickedness of our legal system but this one is grievously terrible....the law is meant for ordinary people who don't have big money but our politicians will ge away with any crime and nothing will happen

Peter Obi needs to take a chill pill and get facts before responding to every major trending issue.

The Judge in this case has come out with damning counter- claims that the convicted person indeed belonged to a criminal robbery gang and that in the coming days the full revelation of the case would be made public.
