VICE-PRESIDENT Kashim Shettima’s attack on Kemi Badenoch after her comments on Nigeria is typical of the country’s leaders. They are hostile to criticism and denythatfacts are sacrosanct. It is one reason Nigeria remains comatose. Shettima should stop exchanging words with Badenoch. Born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and raised in Lagos till she returned to the UK at 16, the leader of the British Conservative Party has spoken freely about her Nigeriandispleasures. The fire began ragingafter she recently described Lagos as “where fear was everywhere” and “almost everything seemed broken.” Badenoch recalled, “Neighbours scream as they are being burgled and beaten…and wondering if your home will be next.” She rememberedthat her brother’s personal belongings were stolen. She escaped from Nigeria in 1996 at the height of Sani Abacha’s brutal military dictatorship. In return, Shettima lashed out at Badenoch, saying she was “denigrating her nation of origin” and that “she has even every right to remove the Kemi from her name.”This is uncalled for. The VP called Nigeria “the greatest black nation on earth”though the evidence is hard to see. Nigeria is the ‘Giant of Africa’ with a clay foot. Shettima is not alone. In 2004,Olusegun Obasanjo, arguably Nigeria’s best president since 1999, cursed hip-hop star Eedris Abdulkarim after the artiste released a song, Jagajaga, detailing the country’s general disorder, violence, and the ordeal of the common folk. Afrobeats star Davidohas also come under fire for his candid opinions about Nigeria’s woeful profile. Nigeria’s leaders hate such candour about the country. They call it de-marketing Nigeria and rather prefer to play the ostrich. The world is an open market, and everyone can see what each country is up to. In 2016, British Prime Minister David Cameron told Queen Elizabeth III at an event to mark her 90th birthday: “We’ve got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain…Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world.” What a shame! Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index on Nigeria agrees. Shettima must think beyond Kemi Badenoch Rather than vilify her, President Bola Tinubu and his government should address the issues Badenoch raised. The exit of multinationals and the closure of local companies highlight that Nigeria is not working. The electricity grid has collapsed for the 12th time in 2024. In contrast, power is steady in Tanzania. South Africa and Egypt generate 58,000 megawatts each. The rich send their children overseas for education because the public school system is broken. Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu are recent examples of Nigerian presidents who do not entrust their health to local hospitals because the system is wretched. Migration is a healthy, old global practice but in Nigeria, it has become an escape from horror. Insecurity has worsened since Badenoch’s days in Nigeria. Islamic terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other gun-toting non-state actors roam free in large swathes of the country. Farmers pay hefty levies to cultivate their land or to harvest their crops.Badenoch “does not couch her words, and says it as it is,” as her spokesman says. This makes Nigerian leaders uncomfortable. There is a sense that the government is not working for the people despite the taxes and levies imposed on them. They generate their electricity, which is now threatened by high fuel costs. They sink their boreholes and create their home security systems. With the shabby public school system, many pay through their noses to send their children toprivate institutions. People like Badenoch who speak out about Nigeria’s miserable state are not the enemy; they want the best for the country. Nigeria’s leaders are the country’s biggest de-marketers. They should curb their outlandish tastes and fancies and not take such criticism personally. https://punchng.com/kemi-vs-shettima-facts-are-sacrosanct/ |

Facts are indeed sacrosanct. Tinubu is not the best the Yorubas can offer. Miserable fools will come to attack this but they can't change the sacrosanct. Wike is the defacto President and the real leader in the pack. Tinubu and Gbajabiamila understand that Oga Na master. Miserable fools will come to attack this but they can't change the sacrosanct. Nigeria needs better, deserves better. Nothing good will come from Tinubu/Shettima |

Of course someone who hates the truth would attack Badenoach over her comments Everything she said is true, tell me one thing she said about Nigeria that isn't true? |

Bobloco:Can't Kemi speak about the ills in the United Kingdom? Are there no iills in the UK? I thought her allegiance lies with the UK so if "saying the truth" is being patriotic as portrayed by hypocrites, let Lemi speak about the ills in the UK where her loyalty lies the most. Then I asked, is lizard coming out from your tap? Is ot true to state that " Nigerian Police are robbers"? Is this a fact? Is it a fact that Northern Migeria is "bolo haram",? Then its safe to sY the South west is OPC while the South East is Ipob? Kemi's atrempt to clearly denigrate either Nigeria or Northern Nigeria is self servicing in a false hope to please the Conservative British. This is surely her way downward |

Mindlog:She should give her best to the United zkingdom She already said she is not a Nogerian? How could she want the best for a Country you denounced? Ate you guts not ashamed of calling white black? So she speak no ills about the UK because she does not wish the best for the UK, right? I m in the UK and until Kemi is truthful and bold enough to speak about that, then she should shut her leaking mouth. |

Bobloco:This is a rubbish write up by punch. I ask, Kemi talked about her experience when she was in Nigeria. Was Tinubu the president then or Shettima the VP? Secondly, who was the Person or party I'm power then? Direct your rants to the those at the helm of affairs during the period Kemi was in Nigeria |

It is always funny seeing deluded folks thinking Kemi's disparagement of Nigeria is done out of love for the country. A kind of "war is peace" propaganda. Only tribalists and haters of Nigeria cling to this absurd notion. She is only interested in furthering her political career and exploiting Nigeria for political gain. Pledging her allegiance to the UK, while some people here keep consoling themselves with fantasies. |

Not sure you got a brain though. Fact is, It has even got worse since the days Kemi talked about Should they leave the current leaders that are damaging the country currently with looting and terrible policies and go blame the dead ones then? jogojogo: |
