Tax Reform Bills: North Is An Asset, Not Liability To Nigeria - Ndume by Edygrin(op): 1:26pm On Dec 23, 2024
Borno South senator, Ali Ndume, says the North is an asset and not a liability to Nigeria.

The assertion follows his opposition to the tax reform bills.

In a statement he released on Monday, Ndume again criticised the timing and scope of the bills, saying that they disproportionately target low- and middle-income Nigerians who are already bearing the brunt of the President Bola Tinubu administration’s economic policies.

According to him, the North was, is, and will never be a parasite or dependent on any region or even the country.

Arguing that the North is an asset and not liability to Nigeria, he stressed that those who think that the tax reforms are only against Northern interests are naive.

He explained, “As it is, the law is against all low- and middle-income Nigerians.

Ndume called for the withdrawal of the tax reform bills, stressing the need for broader consultations and greater stakeholder involvement and advised the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, to focus on expanding the tax net and improving accountability and transparency.

He opined, “The FIRS should concentrate on expanding the tax net and collecting more. Also, accountability and transparency should be increased.

Ndume urged the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to scrutinise commercial banks, arguing that their substantial yearly profits warrant higher tax contributions.

He stated the importance of prioritising governance reforms over tax reforms, saying that the country’s current personnel and overhead expenditure consumes a significant portion of the budget.

The senator explained that the personnel and overhead expenditure for 2024 is about 50 to 60 percent of the budget itself, lamenting that in November, 20 percent of the budget has not been implemented as the recurrent expenditure has already been exhausted.

He alleged that over 15 to 20 trillion naira is going into personnel, debt servicing and recurrent expenditure.

I don't understand why Ndume is so obsessed with those bills. Those bills are supposed to compel every clueless governor to become more productive.

Everyday Northerners aren't parasites because they mostly depend on agriculture to survive, but northern politicians and business men are the biggest parasites in Nigeria because they use their influence to grip oil wells firmly

How can a Giant Parasitic North be an Assets ?

Since 1912 the budget of the North till date is dependent on Southern Resources and Niger Delta oil money 💰.

Almajiris production and Terrorism for political purposes are not Assets but liability.

Somalia would've been a paradise compared with the Northern regional if South wasn't included in Nigeria

This man doesn't know the meaning of liability. Terrorism must be bringing tourism to the north according to him.

Were you to be Ndume, you will not only be obsessed, you will be terrified!
Read the lips of the current state governor as well as the reaction of our vice-president, they're all in panic mode!
Borno state is not only the heart of terrorism, its currently the subject of an international controversy thrown up by Kemi(British Parliament leader)!
Technically Borno is grounded due to the unrest meaning no social, economic or tourist activities to draw in revenue/investors; and everyone is busy talking about a Tax reform bill that will block the state survival channel - that's like waving a red flag in front of a Bull!

With all due respect, The North is not just a liability, but a huge Economic and social Burden to the nation. Their conservative and dogmatic approach to issues leaves a lot to be desired.

Re: Tax Reform Bills: North Is An Asset, Not Liability To Nigeria - Ndume by Solcampbell:
The North could be a powerhouse, but they keep getting stuck with leaders who don't know what they're doing.

Before oil took over, the North, especially Kano, was a major player in manufacturing. Those industrial estates – Sharada, Bompai, you name it – were churning out all sorts of stuff, just as good as anything you'd find in Lagos or Ogun. They were making it in the North back then – biscuits, sweets, even cosmetics! It was the Indians and Lebanese who came in and set up all these factories, giving lots of people jobs and bringing in a lot of money for the government.

But the rise of the oil industry and the political dominance of Northern in Nigeria during the 1980s contributed to the neglect and eventual decline of the region's established industries.

In the 1980s, Aminu Dantata, Dangote's maternal uncle, acquired most of these companies and industrial estates in Kano and promptly shut them down. Just like that!

Northern Nigerian Flour Mills (NNFM), the makers of Golden Penny noodles, was once the pride of Bompai Industrial Estate. By the mid-2000s, however, the factory finally shut its doors. Before its closure, the area bustled with activity, attracting traders from across Nigeria, West Africa, and even overseas, making it as lively as Alaba International Market. Today, the scene is drastically different—silent and deserted, with only a lone gateman stationed outside. Yet, in a curious parallel to the Port Harcourt refinery and similar establishments, senior staff continue to draw salaries despite the factory’s inactivity.

Northern Nigerian Flour Mills have now been converted to a warehouse and Golden Penny noodles is now manufactured in Lagos and sent here embarassed

Our brother, Buhari was president for eight years, but he never considered reviving any of the industrial estates or big companies. Northern governors didn’t push him either, content with the steady inflow of funds from the federation account. Instead, billions were wasted on a fruitless search for oil in the north and Niger.

Had these funds been invested in agriculture and the northern manufacturing companies, there would likely be no fear of the current tax reforms.

Far from truth and he knows it too.
Look at the tax reform bill that will galvanize growth, help SMEs etc and the North is lazily opposing it without a tangible reason.
Showing that they are lazy parasites.
Not North Central who are not really Northerners but forcefully roped into being called North by the rogue Northern military govts..
