Tax Reform Is Here To Stay, Says Tinubu by iwaeda(op): 9:51pm On Dec 23, 2024
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has insisted that the tax reform of his administration has come to stay.

He stated this on Monday night during the presidential media chat aired by NTA.

The tax reform bills, which are before the National Assembly, have generated controversies and met push back especially from the Northern leaders, forcing the lawmakers to initiate consultation.

But Tinubu in his address said the reforms might not be embraced by everybody, but it was here to stay.

He said, “The tax reform is here to stay. The reform is pro-poor and it is to widen the tax net, so we can have more people paying.

“The hallmark of a good leader is the ability to do what you have to do at the time it ought to be done.”

Meanwhile, given the mounting opposition to the bills by some governors and senators, the President said he was open to negotiations on the issue.

“Tax matters are subjects of debates and negotiations. I don’t mind cutting edges. I will,” he added.

Hmmm...

I watched President Tinubu's media chat yesterday...

In all honesty, I was shocked to see the man is well coordinated and actually knows what he is doing. Somehow, the media and his protocol officials have somewhat beclouded this man, giving us an impression that he is not coordinated and that's why he is running from the media.

The opposite was the case. He is intelligent and very sound...he was using the very right technical terms in Economics, Finance, Tax, Security, Education, Budgeting, Governance..e.t.c..He knows what he is doing.

I will partly blame the journalists present, they seems not to ask some deep questions Nigerians will want to know.

From what I saw yesterday o.....If, we are to select candidates again by their performance at interviews.,...non of the leading candidates at the last elections comes close to Tinubu.

This is my honest opinion

First the banner at lekki during festive period.
Now some folks want build sharia court in oyo.

I think the north has declared an hybrid war against SW
To get back at jagaban
SW should be vigilant the enemy is within.

North can/will survive the tax reform, I think it's just that they are not ready. But more attention needs to go to the massive insecurity challenges.

Peter OBI supporters may not like this but when OBI discusses topic like this you see lack of depth!

. The North could be a powerhouse, but they keep getting stuck with leaders who don't know what they're doing.

Before oil took over, the North, especially Kano, was a major player in manufacturing. Those industrial estates –Challawa Sharada, Bompai, you name it – were churning out all sorts of stuff, just as good as anything you'd find in Lagos or Ogun. They were making it in the North back then – biscuits, sweets, detergents, even cosmetics! It was the Indians and Lebanese who came in and set up all these factories, giving lots of people jobs and bringing in a lot of money for the government.

But the rise of the oil industry and the political dominance of Northern in Nigeria during the 1980s contributed to the neglect and eventual decline of the region's established industries.

In the 1980s, Aminu Dantata, Dangote's maternal uncle, acquired most of these companies and industrial estates in Kano and promptly shut them down. Just like that!

Northern Nigerian Flour Mills (NNFM), the makers of Golden Penny noodles, was once the pride of Bompai Industrial Estate. By the mid-2000s, however, the factory finally shut its doors. Before its closure, the area bustled with activity, attracting traders from across Nigeria, West Africa, and even overseas, making it as lively as Alaba International Market. Today, the scene is drastically different—silent and deserted, with only a lone gateman stationed outside. Yet, in a curious parallel to the Port Harcourt refinery and similar establishments, senior staff continue to draw salaries despite the factory’s inactivity.

Northern Nigerian Flour Mills have now been converted to a warehouse and Golden Penny noodles is now manufactured in Lagos and sent here embarassed

Our brother, Buhari was president for eight years, but he never considered reviving any of the industrial estates or big companies. Northern governors didn’t push him either, content with the steady inflow of funds from the federation account. Instead, billions were wasted on a fruitless search for oil in the north and Niger.

Had these funds been invested in agriculture and the northern manufacturing companies, there would likely be no fear of the current tax reforms.
