Gunmen Kidnap Travellers In 18-Seater Bus In Ekiti State, Demand Hefty Ransom

December 23, 2024

Tragedy struck in Ekiti State, Southwestern region of Nigeria, after some gunmen were reported to have kidnapped some travellers.

The incident occured at Emure-Ile in the Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti.

Speaking on the development, The Nation quoted from a source at the Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria,(RTEAN) Ado-Ekiti Motor Terminal branch, confirmed the incident.

It was noted that the kidnappers had contacted the driver’s family, they however demanded a whopping sum of N30million ransom for each of the passengers.

According to the source, the driver, identified as Sunday Emmanuel was kidnapped alongside the passengers.

It was gathered that the bus conveying the travellers who were returning from Onitsha, Anambra State to Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital was ambushed on Sunday night by the daredevil attackers.

The source noted that cries of some children in the bus attracted attention of passersby in the early hours of Monday, before it was reported to the nearest police station.

They called the family of the driver and they demanded a ransom of N30 million.

"They said they would call back, but they have not done so yet. They left some children on the bus, and it seems that some people to the the farm saw the kids and alerted the police in Emure-Owo. The driver’s union in Ado-Ekiti is currently holding a meeting on how to reach out to the kidnappers," he said.

He added that two of the kidnapped victims escaped while they were being herded into the bush.

Efforts to get the Ekiti police command’s comment was not successful as calls to the telephone line of the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, rang out.

Before you mock them, the bus is coming from Anambra to Ekiti state. So try to think twice. Even the driver name shows it’s not a Yoruba name.

Amotekun and the police should action on this, I am confident they will be returned soon.

Just when I was telling someone yesterday that there has been reduction in reported case of kidnapping, we suddenly got this one.

It's shameful when adults like you come here to constitute nuisance.
It's a huge disgrace.

Wishing the kidnapped swift rescue and the kidnappers a swift transition to hell

Probably Yoruba's going home for Christmas. Or majority of Southwesterners.

A lot of them are over there, doing tailoring and other menial jobs.

Dey play.

A lot of westerners doing their business in Anambra also travel home for Christmas.

Majority of people in the vehicle are Yorubas going home for the holiday.

I pray they are found in good health.

Are you one of the kidnappers? Coz this one you said majority like you and the kidnappers counted them.

Lot of Yoruba from Ekiti in Anambra? What business are they doing in Anambra? By the way, I doubt Yoruba travel much for Christmas to their home state coz while growing up, lot of non-Oyo Yoruba reside in Ibadan and most of them do their Christmas in Ibadan.

Yoruba only travel enmasse during Ileya.

Lastly, irrespective of whether 99% of them are Yoruba or not, my prayer is for them to be found in good health and swiftness.

This goes to show how shallow minded and stupid many people on this site are.

People were kidnapped, and all you guys can think about is “it’s Igbo” “it’s Yoruba” you lot are m@d.

Stop the tribalism please, at this point it is both childish and stupidity considering the fact that 99% of you guys constituting this nuisance are above 18 years. Tueeeh

From my personal experience with numerous attacks by bandits, passing through Lagos - Oyo - ilorin- Mokwa - Abuja is much safer than passing through Akure/Ekiti - Lokoja -Abuja. The most dangerous route now is Ekiti/Akure to Lokoja, so travelers should be very careful on that route.

For those that are coming from South South or South East to Sokoto state, the fastest route to Sokoto is Abuja - Zaria - Funtua - Gusau - Sokoto, and the most very dangerous route is from Funtua - Gusau - Sokoto. Travelers should be very careful on that route, especially at night. The attack by bandits is very minimal in the day due to roadblocks by security operatives but very dangerous at night. Even there is a curfew on that route from 6 pm - 7 am. If you're traveling to that route and your driver reaches Zaria in the evening time, please don't allow the driver to move further, or you can come down from the bus because some drivers are very stubborn.

One of the most dangerous roads before was Abuja - Kaduna, but our soldiers have taken over the road, no more bandits attack on that road

My heart was beating faster as I read your summary of how to navigate the perilous minefield that road travel has become in Nigeria. Within the living memory of anyone over 30 who is familiar with Nigeria, all the roads cited in your generously compiled crime rate comparison would have ranked among Africa's safest. Now those very same roads that crisscross a growing list of Nigerian states BEYOND the north, are essentially war-zoned by a rising tide of fundamentalist terrorism funded by kidnapping for ransom.

Many moons ago before Islamic terror swept into Nigeria's arid northern hinterland, I traveled the Abuja to Kano highway and marveled at the flawless road surface for mile upon mile of arrow-straight dual carriageway pointing to the distant, semi-arid horizon. Keeping my SUV rolling on the safe side of 80 mph, we were frequently buffeted by the slipstream of sleek new Mercedes and BMW vehicles conveying the northern Nigerian moneyed elite, whose chariots would swoop past going considerably faster, bound for Zaria, Kaduna, and Kano beyond.

So sad to see the Balkanization of Nigeria unfolding chapter by heartbreaking chapter. Before the eyes of history, Nigeria is today in 2024 beset with all the essential prerequisites of militarized anarchy as witnessed in Somalia and Sudan, those long-established portals to Hades in East Central Africa.

These are the ones they are supporting while pretending to combat crime in the Southeast. We will see how it concludes. Some people are suffering and dying while the government is trying to settle scores by spreading propaganda in another area.

So, tribalism and politics is more important to you than humanity ? Where is your empathy ? You are not better than the kidnappers because you both lack feeling for humanity.

You are human being before being a citizen, respect your origin first.

Igbos will NEVER travel from Onitsha to Ekiti of all places (not even Lagos) especially in a Yuletide season, it completely goes against the nature of the Igbos especially when the South East is packed right now with Igbos returning home for Xmas. So the victims are most likely either few Yorubas based in Onitsha, South South people going to the Edo axis or Northerners traveling in transit. Most importantly, I hope they are all rescued safely and the kidnappers apprehended and wiped out. It's sad we now have to tribalize issues as sensitive as security in Nigeria.

I was just kidding about having written any books thus far haha. A work in progress that may see the light of day at some point would be my novel set in the restive Niger Delta area, in which Izon Egbesu warriors lock horns with imported mercenaries hired to protect oil export infrastructure when the Nigerian navy finds itself out of its depth amid the labyrinth of the 'Delta's swamps, lagoons and swiftly flowing jungle rivers.

A long-time fan of action author Tom Clancy and of the James Bond franchise, my plot lines always entail copious firefights, intrigue, betrayal, greed, skulduggery, and reckless desperation, all stirred in as plot elements that prepare the ground for gratuitous pandemonium and mayhem in large doses.
