Bro always remember in crop production, there's what they called climatic and soil requirements, maybe the soil in southern parts of the country doesn't support such crop.

Re: The Frustrating Prices Of Onions In The Market (Photos) by abibun: 6:23pm On Dec 24, 2024
The onions currently in the market were planted during the rainy season. Farmers during this period record much lost due to excessive water. Only rich farmers plant onions during raining season, this is one of the reasons onions is not that much in the market thereby making it expensive .
But come January or February, the new crop of irrigated onions will arrive, bringing prices down.

Southern soil does support onions, that you won't be needing much fertilizer.
The major problem is rainfall that onions don't like and we don't practice irrigation in the southern part

I bought onions on Saturday and way billed it to my mum in the east because I reside in the north. Fast forward 72hrs after, my mum is yet to get the goods I sent her. I went back to the park to complain only for the manager to tell me that the goods was missing. He arrogantly asked what I wanted him to do and from a pained heart, I insisted that he pay for the missing goods. He asked me to come back after a month to collect my money else I should do my worst. I am a gentleman by nature, but I lost my cool when I engaged him in a heated argument. I kuku go report am give police. The police gave him until 6pm today to return the onions or face arrest.
You did well bro..kindly update us

Bro, is that the cause of the unfortunate increase in prices of onions?
Not only onions, I noticed the price of most vegetables have also gone up and also not much in circulation. While the price of food crops like beans, rice, millets, cassava and maize decreased.
I think most Nigerian farmers focused more on the cultivation of the food crops I mentioned above this year than ever before.

The price of most vegetables have almost tripled, farmers focused more on food crops this year because of the hunger in the land, vegetables were neglected.

After reading through all the submissions above, I understand that average Nigerian have amnesia or reading disability.

Onion 🧅 is mainly planted in the core northern region, Maiduguri / Sokoto. This year there was unpredictable rainfall that Sahara desert 🏜️ was flooded. Also, this lead to an incident in Maiduguri which a dam collapsed and crop produce failed massively.

You haven't seen onion plantation in Benue state, it will wow you, we plenty and harvest onion more than some north east and north west states. The reason for scarcity is seasonal. By late January to February, onions will flood the market nationwide.

The effects of such in not immediate it is now that it will tell on items like Onion 🧅 which is seasonal planted.

I hope this educate some people.

About two days ago, I went to the market to purchase some few food items. Na so I say make I buy onions for stew. Bros, the price was alarming. The woman who sells onions told me that four tiny onions go for N500. The onions were as small as Maggi cubes. I looked back, then looked at my left and right sides to be sure that she wasn't speaking to someone else. When I asked her for the price of a sizeable one, she said 2k. I was astonished to my bone marrow. Paying N2,000 for an averaged size onion! Same amount is greater than what I used to prepare a pot of soup in 2018.

What is the cause of this alarming price of onions? Is it an artificial scarcity caused by the Christmas season or a natural disaster like flood, which some persons are attributing as the cause? Are there no sustainable and enduring ways to check this hydra-headed inflation of food items in Nigeria?
..it's the high costs of fuel that is the cause of onions...the high costs of transportation ...high costs of transportating this onions to the market for sale is the cause of the high costs of onions...from the removal of fuel subsidy.. Tinubu harsh economic policies causing it

At exactly 6pm, I called the police officer, who I believe placed a call to him (tje park manager) because he called me to apologize and promised to have my item delivered to my mum first thing tomorrow morning. I will just give him the benefit of doubt. Let's see what tomorrow holds

Since Niger broke away from West africa, onions had become very expensive, they shut their border against us and other west african nations and focused on other african nations. Niger is the largest exporters of onions in africa. We need to start growing onions asap.
