Sometimes, different people do the same thing for different reasons. Not everyone that shops at malls do so for ostentation sake. Some people do it for hygiene sake. Roadside sellers will sneeze into the gutter or urinate or even go to a hidden corner to poo and return to their stand to continue selling without washing their hands. I have watched a food hawker using water from the gutter to wash the plates she was using to serve people. Actually, the water was rushing out of the gutter wall like tap water, and looked clean. Some of the customers (mostly bus drivers and bus loaders) that crowded her watched her use the water to wash the plates and afterwards accepted the food served in those plates.

A few days ago, I wanted to buy Dates from an Aboki. I sighted him while he was still a bit far and I was waiting for him to get to where I was standing so that I would patronise him. As he was coming, he stopped, packed his wheelbarrow, moved close to a gutter, urinated and returned to continue his movement without washing his hands. As he was getting closer to where I was standing, someone stopped him and he had to use a cup to measure tiger nuts into a waterproof bag for the person. This is the same person who just urinated without washing his hands. But if there's a shopping mall nearby and I ignore him to patronise the shopping mall, someone like you will condemn me for not patronising him.

I pity roadside sellers. I give them money when I can afford to do so. When I manage to buy things from them, I don't accept balance from them. But I don't have to express the pity to the detriment of my health.

Apart from hygiene, there is another concern. The ones that hawk cashew nuts are very mischievous and crafty. They use neat cashew nuts to cover very bad ones in the nylons or in the bottles. Once you open what you got from them, you will regret patronising them. If it is not wickedness, why do they carefully use neat ones to cover the bad ones? If you buy cashew nut from a shopping mall, the nuts inside will be as neat as the ones you could see from outside the transparent bottle.

Shop at mart instead of mall

Annoyingly, those who are privilege hardly patronize road side sellers. They keep on giving their money to the capitalist . Buying fresh fruits at road side compared to mall or mart is almost 10% difference

Lately, I have been deliberately buying some things at the road side just to boost the economy

coputa:
Public outrage continues to trail the purchase of a new presidential jet by the Bola Tinubu administration.

The government’s decision to allocate over N150 billion for the purchase of the aircraft, at a time when Nigerians are grappling with a tough economic environment and a lingering cost of living crisis, has angered many.

Mr Tinubu’s policies of subsidy removal and exchange rate unification have led to increases in the prices of commodities, which experts believe are driving the current inflation.

The president has, in the past one year, urged Nigerians to bear with the hardship occasioned by those policies.

However, the government does not appear keen to follow its own counsel, as inflation currently stands at 33 per cent.

In this report, DAILY POST reviews some of the most lavish purchases under the current administration.

Presidential Jet

The Airbus A330, which replaced the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) bought under the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo, reportedly cost the Nigerian government over $100 million.

It should be recalled that the government secured the approval of the House Committee for the purchase of this luxurious jet, which drew the ire of many Nigerians who have described the government’s action as insensitive.

Although the National Assembly claimed it is yet to appropriate money for the purchase, the president has already taken the jet for a flight to France.

Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has consistently maintained that he is ready to grant any approval requested to finalise the purchase.

“I don’t see how it is feasible that the topmost priority of a government dealing with the level of biting hunger and poverty in the land is to consider the purchase of a befitting aircraft for the president,” Oby Ezekwesili, a former minister, said during an appearance on Arise Television’s ‘Politics Today on Sunday.

Presidential Yacht

Last year, there was significant backlash against the government for the planned purchase of a presidential yacht.

In the 2023 supplementary budget of N2.17 trillion, President Tinubu proposed N5 billion for the procurement of a presidential yacht.

The uproar over the proposal led to the National Assembly declining the request and diverting the money towards other expenses.

However, according to several sources, the yacht had already arrived in the country at that point. The government has neither confirmed nor denied this.

DAILY POST learnt that the House of Representatives is putting pressure on the Navy to return the ship to the vendor.

N21 Billion House for Shettima

Another controversial expense since this administration took office is the reported N21 billion spent on the completion of the official residence of the Vice President.

The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, prioritised the completion of the residential project despite other competing infrastructure projects needing attention.

But despite public outrage, the minister proceeded to complete and commission the project.

N160 Million Cars for National Assembly Members

Amid the current economic hardship, members of the National Assembly also received their share of the luxury with the purchase of luxurious Sport Utility Vehicles, which are believed to have cost N160 million per unit for members of the House.

It is unclear what the Senate received, but they are expected to get more.

While the House claimed that the vehicles are official cars to be returned at the end of the administration, DAILY POST learnt that some lawmakers opted for cash instead of the car.

N90 Billion Subsidy for Hajj

The government also spent N90 billion on the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It could be recalled that the devaluation of the naira led to a sharp increase in the cost of Hajj for the 2024 exercise, with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) forced to review the fee several times.

The government subsequently intervened with a N90 billion subsidy; however, that money is now the subject of multiple probes by different anti-graft agencies.

The Chairman of NAHCON, Jalal Arabi, and several other management staff were arrested by the EFCC over the alleged mismangement of the N90 billion subsidy.

N1.5 Billion Cars for Office of the First Lady

Nigerians have had a complicated relationship with the Office of the First Lady due to the overbearing nature of some of its occupants, who, despite being unelected, are notorious for intruding into governance.

There is also the cost associated with running the office, which is largely a ceremonial role.

In the 2023 supplementary budget, the government proposed N1.5 billion to buy vehicles for the office.

you go to the roadside to buy oranges and the seller is talking to you rudely as if you came to beg for whatever she's sell.if you even ask the price and you decide to price it she will respond with curses

Some will even be using you to answer call and be expecting your to stand there till she finish talking on phone.another issue is they're so rude to the extent that they have no customer relations. You will give them N500 and after buying whatever and you say madam please give me my change, they'll respond within annoying and saucy response like there's no change o,I no fit comot here o,I no fit find change etc

Again as you're carrying your shopping bag, you're avoiding reckless okada, private cars splashing water on you, people pushing you etc.

But at least if you go to shopping malls even when their stuffs might be relatively expensive compared to the prices at the local market but you know you will be treated with basic human decency and respect. Nobody is hurling insult at your face, you can use the pos for convenience etc.its more easier and stress free

Aside that you see the prices of each product and that helps in managing your spending and moving around. Ok today I went to the local market to buy onions. I was asking the seller how much is your onions, he ignored me,he was using me to press phone.that won't happen in a mall.infact I don't have to discuss with the cashier because I have seen the prices of whatever product.truth be told those local market traders are too caustic

It your opinion though. During Obasanjo time we are recovering from economic sanctions from military rule and many financial assets frozen. Currently we have low productivity even in igbo governed states and businesses. We have oil prices reducing while corruption has reduced our competitiveness in drilling for oil, militancy a part too. Lastly we now have a bigger population than then before. Nigeria is the next frontier, we need to make this decisions tinubu is making or it economic collapse. They are not angels.
